Ice Cream From a 1940s Scooter on Maplewood Streets

The brick-and-mortar establishment is hitting the streets on three wheels with homemade ice cream in a circa 1940s Cushman ice cream vending scooter.

Part-owner James Gill, was in a Maplewood neighborhood for the first day of selling from the motorized tricycle.

Maplewood is first because Gill lives here. The city currently bans food trucks, so as long as the scooter doesn’t park it’s OK.

Gill said the cycle came out of Alabama and was restored in Texas.

“There’s only one right now,” he said. “There’s two more we are in the works of trying to get, once this one starts to pay for itself a little bit.”

From the dry ice cooled freezer, Gill sells homemade ice cream sandwiches, and ice cream in chocolate, vanilla, cookies and cream, heath bar, chocolate chip, peach and coffee flavors. "Maggie's Ice Box" will replace the current graphics on the cooler box eventually.

Gill said he’s still working out some kinks. “My throttle pin keeps coming off,” he said.
