Amazing Brentwood Instructors/Seniors/Friends

Igor Lisovsky is World-class Skater, Instructor and Coffee Club member...come get to know him!

You would expect a world champion athlete to be a little proud. Wouldn’t you? You expect to hear all about athlete’s world class exploits often. Don’t you? You have seen multiple pictures of athletes’ conquests. Haven’t you? That just seems to be par for the course. Right?

Not exactly what you get in the case of Igor Lisovsky, World Champion Pairs Figure Skater of 1981, anyway. Igor skates during Coffee Club at Brentwood Ice Arena. He teaches a lesson or two –to some doctors and professors - during that time. He kindly makes way for the speed skaters. He smiles with genuine affection at the grand dame of coffee club-Mrs. Marina Aluisa (link to blog). He chats for a time with Doris and Bill Rickard.  Then, during other sessions -training sessions & lightly attended public sessions he teaches and he flies.

Even though he is over 50, his speed is remarkable and his edges are deep. He still does the classic “Figures” of figure skating with such beautiful precision that the patterns etched in the ice would be worth framing. If you tell him such things, he responds with a somewhat shy smile, “Nah-but thank you”. He is not perfect and he does not claim to be. He does know the skating industry; he is not a young contender enamored by it. He understands the politics, the rush of glory and the pain of the business.

Raised during the height of Russian domination in figure skating, Igor lived to skate. It was decided for him. He loved skating yet could be terrified by its demands at the same time. He was coached by Tamara Moskvina, Igor Moskvin and Alexei Mishin. As a quiet young man, the pushing for excellence came with a price. For Igor and his coaches, it also came with success and glory. (An internet search will reward you with a bounty of information, if you like.)

Now, Igor is content to teach. He will perform on occasion, when he is pressed to do it. But mostly he teaches. As a coach to young children, he is patient and fun. As a coach to contenders, he pushes for excellence without the yelling and tantrums of many coaches. With his amazing history, it is sheer serendipity to have him as an instructor for Brentwood’s Learn to Skate Program.
