Arbor Day - Important in Brentwood

Honor Arbor Day and Keep the Green Alive wherever you live.

Annually, our nation sets aside a day to remember the importance of TREES. Trees? What is the big deal? Well, we will tell you!

Did You Know…

  • The first Arbor Day took place on April 10, 1872 in Nebraska. It was the brainchild of Julius Sterling Morton (1832-1902), a Nebraska journalist and politician. He proposed that a special day be set aside in his state, dedicated to tree planting and increasing awareness of the importance of trees.
  • Trees not only beautify the landscape but also provide heat relief, increase air quality as a result of their release of oxygen, help prevent erosion and provide a wind-break on flat farmland.
  • In 1970, President Richard Nixon proclaimed the last Friday in April as National Arbor Day so that today all 50 states celebrate Arbor Day.
  • Brentwood has celebrated Arbor Day, being recognized as a “Tree City USA” for twenty-four years! Arborist Bob Brockman practices tree conservation in an organized effort to preserve our green spaces, filing his plans and reports annually.
  • Fourth grade students from St. Mary Magdalen School and Mark Twain School attend our annual celebration to present original poetry and performances to illustrate things they have learned about tree preservation.

This year, Friday, April 27th is a special day. It is a day to remind us of the importance of our tree-filled heritage. It is the day the City of Brentwood honors Arbor Day with a ceremony in Memorial Park.
