One Rule Worth Following: Don't Leave Your Purse in Your Car

The invitation to steal my purse by leaving it in the car was accepted. I guess I will reconsider the rules.

It wasn't the unthinkable.

In fact, not only my mother, but also Mark, had told me on more than one occasion, "Don't leave your purse in the car" or "Why don't you play by the rules and not leave your purse in the car?"

I usually just shrugged them off and thought, "There's nothing in there anyway" or "Who's going to take my purse?" Well, that's a really good question, because someone has done just that!

After hearing my dog bark and the van alarm go off about 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning and wandering back to sleep dreamily thinking, "That's not my alarm," I was awakened about 45 minutes later to confirm that, yes, my alarm did sound. Someone had thrown a large rock into my window and shattered it. My purse and its contents were gone, including my iPhone 4 and prescription sunglasses. Well, good *@*?/%* morning to me.

So, I spent the morning dealing with insurance and credit card companies, AT&T, and the auto glass company. I've come to learn that many of my neighbors also experienced a similar fate.

There really wasn't anything of significance in my purse - nothing that can't be replaced after a few phone calls and an insurance claim later (ha! no cash, you fools!). And, of course, I'm fortunate that no one was hurt or injured. But, geez! I'm reeling over this—this—interruption of my life, space, belongings. Granted, a broken window and stolen purse are relatively minor violations as far as crime goes, but it is unnerving, nonetheless.

Yes, I left my purse in a locked car in my driveway and it was stolen. Mark and my mom can say, "I told you so." Thanks to the fools, this is one rule that is probably not worth shrugging off.
