In an effort to build a positive relationship, in 2010 the student council at Brentwood High School approached the Maplewood High student council to brainstorm how to build a sense of community between the rival schools.

This was the beginning of the Game for a Difference, a fundraiser shared by the schools at the MRH-BHS varsity boys’ basketball game each year.  Student leaders from each school rally to raise money for a worthy cause.

In 2010, the “Shake the Stands” fundraiser went to victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti.  “Fight the Flood” in 2011 benefited the people of Costa Rica, whose lives were ravaged by the flood.

This year, the councils have chosen a cause much closer to home—residents of Joplin whose lives were torn apart by the tornado last May.

Both schools would like to invite residents of Maplewood and Brentwood to come out and support the both the Junior Varsity boys’ teams (in the Brentwood High gym at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 24), and “Jumpin’ for Joplin” game (at 6:30, following the JV game in the Brentwood gym).

Student tickets are $1, adult tickets are $2, and everyone is encouraged to donate towards the cause to support residents of Joplin, and their school of choice.
