Part animal shelter, part veterinary clinic and part non-profit outreach organization, the APA of Missouri is devoted to strengthening the bonds between humans and pets. A big part of what the organization does is to provide shelter and care for homeless pets, and adoption services to find them good homes. The APA also maintains an online database of lost and found pets in the area, helping reunite lost pets with their families.

The veterinary clinic offers basic routine care such as vaccinations, heartworm medication, flea treatment and treatment of minor illnesses. The clinic does not handle surgery, lab work or emergency care.

The APA also works to educate the public about animal welfare, with programs in schools and the community. One such program is called PetReach, which brings pets into residential care facilities such as senior care facilities and children's hospitals for therapudic visits.
