The city is still looking for a school crossing guard for the busy morning intersection.
A Brentwood city/school district cooperative effort to have a crossing guard at the intersection of White Avenue and Brentwood Boulevard is still in process. A guard was hired and scheduled to start on Monday, April 29, but called to say they can no longer accept the position, City Administrator Bola Akande said. She said the recruitment effort to fill the position continues. See the city's online ad for the position. The guard was approved by the board of aldermen to help students cross Brentwood Boulevard from approximately 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. "We’ve had some problems, at least the parents have observed some problems, with cars leaving White Avenue in a hurry, making turns right or left in front of kids as they’re trying to cross," …

How much is too much to spend on high school prom festivities?
The MRH students are hockey players, and thought their rink should look better than it did.
Thanks to some Maplewood Richmond Heights Middle School students the city roller hockey rink is in like-new condition, with a plan to keep it that way. Eighth grader Michael Langston said he and some friends were using the rink this winter and all agreed it needed work. “It looked like, honestly, poop,” Langston said. “There was litter everywhere. One time there was a broken cinder block, and like, 10 Powerade bottles." His friend, Steven Wooden, said he slipped on leaves when he played, and the lines were completely faded away. Langston said he pitched cleaning up the rink as a project in their cornerstones connections class. Eventually he and Wooden were given the OK. “We came up with the basics, that we needed to sweep everything up, …

How much is too much to spend on high school prom festivities?
If $1,139 fell into your lap, how would you spend it? When asked, Patch editors said they'd put their money toward new furniture, house payments, student loans, a vacation to South America or, "Diapers. Lots and lots of diapers." But for average families with kids planning for prom season, that amount of money will be spent on limos, dresses and other prom-related expenses. That's according to a Visa survey reported by CNN and other media outlets on Thursday. Let that number sink in: $1,139 per family for prom. It's a slight increase over last year, and is a 40 percent jump from 2011. CNN spoke with Sarah Hoffer, a senior at Webster Groves High School, to look at where all of the money was going: "Her biggest expense was a $259 vintage-…

Social studies teacher Ed Wright has been at Brentwood for nine years, and teaching a total of 20. Assistant Principal/Athletic Director Dr. Ed Johnson said Wright made the announcement at a Christmas party. “You never know what you’re missing until you’re reminded you’re going to be losing this individual and all of a sudden you go into a reflective mode,” Johnson said. Johnson said Wright will be impossible to replace. “He understands so much about the school,” he said. “Being a graduate from Brentwood High School, he truly understands what Brentwood is about, so he’s able to help us keep those tradition that are much valued…

The newly named Maplewood Richmond Heights principal was hired as assistant principal earlier in the year.
Newly named Maplewood Richmond Heights Middle School Principal Michael Dittrich was playing roller hockey with some students at the Maplewood city rink. He said made the suggestion that they could pick up some of the trash around the rink. The students then had the bigger idea to replace the nets and refresh the paint on the rink. He said from that day on the students have completely taken over maintaining the rink, including forming a plan to keep it from going downhill again. “They contacted the city and said we want to help you," he said. "So the city purchased the paint and new nets and we provided the students." He said it's a great example of MRH education. "In the end, it’s not only scholars, but also citizens and leaders and …
