The Brentwood Evening Optimists fire up the grills twice a year to raise funds for local charities. They set up shop by the Gene-Del Printing parking lot, the same place they sell Christmas trees in December. One Evening Optimists member, Sherry Nappier—"like happier with an N," she jokes when spelling her name—said setting up the tents usually means a storm will blow through, but they persevere. Another member, Mary Meers—"like beers with an M," she cracks—was headed to Brentwood High School afterward to award two scholarships to seniors in memory of two past members. Girls Town/Boys Town of Missouri, Brentwood Police/DARE and Goff Moll Post 101 Youth Baseball are other charities they dontate, among many others. Look for the tent again in…

Members of Knights of Columbus and ribs for the people who stopped by the barbecue at Schaeffer Shell. During the second weekend of each month from March through November (except August, when it's too hot), look for a Knights of Columbus crew at the corner of Big Bend Boulevard and Manchester Road. They'll be serving up delicious barbecue for passersby and drive-up customers. The proceeds benefit St. Vincent de Paul, Special Olympics and Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital. September's barbecue will raise money for Backstoppers. The Knights of Columbus started raising money for the organization when Maplewood firefighter Ryan Hummert was killed in the line of duty in 2008. On that first weekend in 2008, more than $7,000 was raised in two …

I write-in McCray's BBQ, once located in Jeffery Plaza, Olive and Woodson. McCray's had the best BBQ in the World. Roscoe's Mobosco Sauce was a spicy awesome sauce. Roscoe is passed...and McCray's BBQ is lost victim of environment zealots because of the BBQ smoke. How I dream of the days the aroma of McCray's would drift through the neighborhood in the early afternoon.   more ›
