Season Ends for Eagles and Blue Devils

Both girls teams lost Monday night in semifinal basketball games. On Tuesday, unfortunately, so did the boys.

Tuesday night was a tough one for Brentwood and Maplewood Richmond Heights basketball. Both boys teams lost their Class 3 District 5 semifinal games at host, Vashon. MRH lost the 5:00 game in a way that was hard to take, and not just because the final score was 64-65. The Devils fell behind 16-19 and 25-38 at the half. Then they started fighting their way back. It was 41-49 after three quarters. They came to within a point, 52-53, with 4:42 to go, tied it at 59 with 1:50 on the clock, and again went down by one with a minute to go. At 12 seconds, junior forward Aaron Collins scored a layup to put the Devils up, for the first time in the game, 64-63. Unfortunately, with seconds to go, it was Collins who called a timeout when MRH had no …

Owens' Scoring, Brentwood's Pressure Leads to Eagles Win

The Eagles cause 25 turnovers and cruise to 64-53 win over Valley Park on Tuesday.

VALLEY PARK – The Brentwood boys basketball team knows that on most nights, and against most opponents, it’s going to face a severe size disadvantage. The Eagles don’t have anyone taller than 6-foot-3, and on Tuesday night, went into a game against a taller Valley Park team. But what Brentwood does have is a bunch of fast, pesky guards that can really pressure the ball and make it difficult for an opponent to run any kind of structured offense. That’s exactly what the Eagles did to the host Hawks, forcing a whopping 25 Valley Park turnovers in a convincing 64-53 win in the first round of the Valley Park Invitational Tournament. “It was a little bit sloppy,” Brentwood coach Brad Kern said. “They had quite a bit of size on us, and we had …

Brentwood Basketball Looking To Get Back On Winning Track

Eagles are primed to improve on last year’s 9-14 season. The season opener is set for Tuesday at home against Construction Careers Academy.

Coming off a 9-14 season last year, and with the two best players from that team now playing in college, some might think the Brentwood High School boys basketball team is in for a rebuilding year this season. Don’t count head coach Brad Kern among those that think that though. Kern said he is very excited about the Eagles prospects for the coming season. “We go about nine deep,” Kern said. “I think we’re deeper than we were last year. We can play more up-tempo than we did in the past, and I think we’ll be more exciting.” Leading the Eagles on the court this year will be its three senior captains Danny Lynch, Diontez Edwards and Jesse Sneed. All three are expected to start, while Kern also expects to get big contributions from juniors Josh…

Next Stop For Brentwood's Cissé Will Be Missouri Baptist

Brentwood's Amadou Cissé averaged 9.8 points, 10 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game as a senior this past season.

When 2011 Brentwood graduate Amadou Cissé begins college this fall at Missouri Baptist University, he is likely to encounter a variety of students with fascinating backgrounds. But, it is likely that his story will still stand out as extraordinarily distinctive. Cissé is officially headed to Missouri Baptist on a basketball scholarship after signing his papers. It is obvious to pinpoint the 6-foot-11 Cissé as a typical basketball center, yet he was introduced to the sport just over one year ago. His rapid progress has been remarkable. Cissé averaged 9.8 points, 10 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game as a senior this past season for the Eagles. He arrived in Brentwood via New York from Senegal, in Western Africa. Previous to that, his family …

Season Recap: Brentwood Teams Endure Challenging Season

A look back at the recently concluded boys and girls basketball season through photos.

It was a very challenging season for the Brentwood boys and girls basketball teams, but there were plenty of exciting games and stories. Patch was on hand all season long, and captured many great moments through photos.   The Brentwood boys lost to Carnahan, 65-51, in the Class 3 District 5 Tournament to finish with a 9-15 record. Senior guard Andrew Erby ended his impressive prep career by averaging a team-leading 15.1 points per game. He was helped out by senior center Amadou Cisse, who averaged 9.8 points, 10 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game. Coach Brad Kern does return junior forward Diontez Edwards, who averaged 7.2 points and 5.4 rebounds per game this season. The Eagles lost eight of their last 10 games, and went 4-6 in the South …

MRH Boys Outlast Brentwood, Maintains Perfect League Mark

Marcus Taylor's second-half outburst sparks the Blue Devils to a 67-53 conference win over the rival Eagles.

From the moment the game tipped off until the final buzzer sounded, head coach Corey Frazier failed to see what he expects from his Maplewood Richmond Heights boys’ basketball team Tuesday night. On the other sideline, Brentwood head coach Brad Kern was pleased with his squad’s effort despite being without 6-foot-11 center Amadou Cisse, who has missed the past few games with an injury. With that said, one would assume that the Eagles knocked off the host Blue Devils in their rivalry rematch. If not for MRH senior reserve Marcus Taylor, Brentwood just might have escaped with the victory. Taylor tallied 17 of his team-best 19 points after halftime to lead the Blue Devils to a 67-53 win over the Eagles to remain perfect in the South Central A…

MRH Dominates Brentwood With Pressure Defense

The Blue Devils' full-court pressure defense fuels a convincing 71-34 victory over rival Brentwood as MRH stays undefeated in conference play.

What started out as your typical nip-and-tuck rivalry game quickly turned into a one-sided contest Tuesday night. The Brentwood boys basketball team fed off the energy of its home crowd in the opening eight minutes, scoring the game’s first six points and holding a slim lead after one quarter. Unfortunately for the Eagles, that energy level took a major hit thanks in large part to the smothering, full-court pressure defense applied by Maplewood Richmond Heights. The Blue Devils outscored the Eagles by a staggering 31 points during the middle two quarters and cruised to a 71-34 South Central A.A. Conference road victory. “The rivalry leads to a high-energy atmosphere,” MRH head coach Corey Frazier said. “Both teams came out with a lot of …

Cissé Makes Transition from Senegal to Brentwood

Amadou Cissé, a senior basketball player at Brentwood High School, has found a new life, a new sport and lots of new friends.

For the record, Brentwood High School senior Amadou Cissé is 6-foot-11. Though his height may be his most obvious feature, what stands out to Brentwood basketball head coach Brad Kern about this young man is his intelligence and good manners. Kern has known Cissé since he first arrived in Brentwood from Senegal, in Western Africa. Cissé came to the United States in March 2010, with his two sisters, to join their mother. They all came from Senegal, but his mother came to the U.S. first. It took nine years for her to get visas for her son and two daughters. When Cissé first arrived in New York, he said everywhere he went he was asked if he played basketball. "Many people asked me, 'You're really tall, do you play basketball?' I said, 'I just…

Brentwood Boys Hoops: Erby Ready to Elevate Role

The Brentwood boys basketball team finished 19-8 last year, making it to the district finals. But just one starter, Andrew Erby, remains.

The Brentwood boys' basketball team lost eight seniors from last year's team. They beat Maplewood Richmond Heights in the district semifinal, but lost to Cardinal Ritter in the championship match to conclude its season. This year, as is often said, is a rebuilding year for Brentwood, and senior Andrew Erby, the one returning starter, is stepping up. The 5-11 guard averaged 14 points a game last year and is looking to elevate his game. "He'll be our floor leader and we'll look to him to score," Brentwood head coach Brad Kern said. Erby will lead the Eagles into their typically tough basketball schedule. They play in the MICDS Holiday Tournament, where Brentwood is the smallest school competing. Last year they had one win and kept close to…
