Brentwood Qualifies 9 For State Wrestling Tournament

Two freshmen from Brentwood and one from Maplewood Richmond Heights qualified for the state meet.

Nine Brentwood wrestlers qualified for the state tournament at the district tournament on Saturday. That number nine is a record for the Eagles, coach Roy Hughes said. The top four finishers in each weight class at the district tournament qualify for the state meet. Brentwood was third overall in the tournament, with 136.5 points. Maplewood Richmond Heights was 10th, with 56. Whitfield won with 223.5 points. "We got what every coach wants, which is to peak at the right time," coach Roy Hughes said. He said he was surprised to have freshmen, Dexter Romos at 106, and Gary Silerio at 120, qualify. Silerio was down in points in his final match but ended up winning with a pin. Senior, David Rivera took second at Districts. He's returning to …

MRH's Romell Person lost his first match but won his second. He's now in wrestlebacks and can do as well as third. Jonas Tiggs and Lucas Jones won their first round matches, and are in a straight line to the championship match. Mykell lost, then won, so he's in wrestlebacks.   more ›

Brentwood Wrestler is a Scholar

David Rivera took fourth at the state meet, and on Sunday was honored statewide for his academics.

Brentwood junior wrestler David Rivera, weeks after taking fourth-place at the state wrestling meet, was recognized on Sunday for his academic achievements. Rivera was honored as one of Missouri’s Academic All-State wrestlers at the Missouri Wrestling Association Hall of Fame Banquet in Columbia, MO.  Earlier this year, Rivera was named first-team all-district in football. He also throws shot and discus in track, competes on the debate team, and is a member of the National Honor Society.  It was the first time in 13 years that a Brentwood wrestler won a medal at the state meet. “David is a great young man,” Brentwood wrestling coach Roy Hughes said in an e-mail.  “He is a hard worker, very focused, and demonstrates great character in all …

Brentwood junior David Rivera earned fourth place in the statewide competition.

Many thanks to the Brentwood School District for sharing this article with the community. Have news to share? Email editor Ryan Martin at ryan.martin@patch.com. For the first time in 13 years, a Brentwood wrestler, David Rivera, has brought a home a medal from the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) state wrestling championships. Rivera, a junior wrestling in the 285-pound weight class, brought home fourth place in the weekend-long championships held in Columbia last weekend. According to Coach Roy Hughes, this is one of just a few state-level medals won by Brentwood wrestlers in the 82-year history of the MSHSAA event. In addition to wrestling, Rivera participates in three other MSHSAA-sanctioned activities: …

Rivera Siblings Rack Up Accomplishments On and Off the Field

Sophia Rivera arrived at a district wrestling tournament in time to congratulate her brother David on his entry to the state tournament after winning a national championship herself.

There was a reunion of two busy Brentwood kids on Saturday. Brentwood High School junior David Rivera was at the Class 1, District 1 MSHSAA wrestling finals at Whitfield School, where he took runner-up in the 285-pound weight class. He's now 29-6 and will go on to wrestle at the state meet. His sister Sophia, an eighth-grader at Brentwood Middle School, arrived in time to see him wrestle, coming from an indoor track meet in Illinois where she had just won a national championship for 14-year-olds in shot put. Patch grabbed this photo of the two of them together, and later got the scoop from their mother, Michelle Hassemer, by email. Here’s what she said about her kids, beginning with a direct quote. “Our kids have made my husband and I VERY…

Wrestling Update: Brentwood Led by Undefeated Hudspeth, Jones

The Eagles are off to a hot start this season.

The Brentwood wrestling team has been on a roll this season. The Eagles are 4-1 in dual meets this season, including a clean sweep in a four-team event against Barat Academy, Lift for Life Academy and MRH earlier this month. Three Brentwood wrestlers have perfect records this season, led by junior Mykell Hudspeth (5-0 in the 145-pound weight class); senior Tyler Jones (also 5-0 in the 170-pound class), and freshman Jann McClure (5-0 at 106/113 pounds). Another freshman, Austin Koster, has been impressive at the 182-pound weight class. He lost his first high school match back in November, but has won every match since, including pin victories in three of those matches. Sportmanship Award Given to Brentwood Wrestling

The wrestling Eagles met their season goals, then were surprised with an area-wide honor.

The Brentwood wrestling squad, under the coaching of Roy Hughes, just about met their perennial goal this season of sending eight grapplers to the state meet in Columbia, MO. Brentwoood sent seven to Mizzou Arena. The last time that many Eagles went to state was in 1999. Hughes also wanted his team to win 80 percent of its dual meets, which they just did, going 14-3 on the season. The season’s end also held an unexpected honor for the team, though. The Brentwood coaching staff and team will receive the Sportsmanship Award from the St. Louis Wrestling Officials & Coaches Association at their annual ceremony in March. The award is given to one team each year (1A thru 4A) that exhibits outstanding sportsmanship. “You think about it, all the …

Brentwood, MRH Wrestling Seasons Conclude in Columbia

Brentwood's seven wrestlers and MRH's three grapplers each were eliminated before the third day at the State Wrestling Championships at Mizzou Arena.

Though Brentwood wrestling brought seven wrestlers, the Eagles will be spectators on the final day of the Missouri State Wrestling Championships at Mizzou Arena in Columbia, Mo. But there some victories along the way for Brentwood and coach Roy Hughes. At 112 pounds, sophomore Rashaad Jordan advanced past day one with a 12-10 decision over Brian Noble (Stanberry). Jordan’s season ended on Friday with a loss to Adrian’s Brandt McMillan in a fall at 2:32. He finishes at 21-11 for this season. Senior Elie Moore, at 140 pounds, ended his season at 31-17. After surviving past Thursday with a 7-6 win over Lathrop’s Trent Scobee, Moore lost in his first match on Friday, 13-6, to Kevin Adam (Blair Oaks). Hughes had a third Eagles grappler advance …

Brentwood, MRH Send Wrestlers to State

Brentwood earns seven state qualifiers while MRH adds three place-winners at the Class 1, District 1 championship.

The Brentwood and Maplewood Richmond Heights wrestling programs will each be well-represented at this week’s state championships in Columbia, Mo. But it was the Whitfield wrestling program that put on a clinic on Saturday en route to defending its MSHSAA Class 1, District 1 championship. The Warriors qualified 13 individuals to the state tournament, including nine district champions. As for Brentwood’s sixth-place finish and seven individual qualifiers, head coach Roy Hughes was satisfied with his squad’s performance. Rashad Jordan (20-9) was the lone finalist, but the junior was pinned in 1:55 by Ryan Strope in the 112-pound title bout. Senior Elie Moore (30-15) used a nifty reversal to pin Whitfield junior Jake Becker with nine seconds …
