The busy fall sports season is here, and several teams from Brentwood and Maplewood Richmond Heights are in action.
The 2011 fall sports season is now in full swing, and several teams from Brentwood and Maplewood Richmond Heights are playing extremely busy schedules. The MRH girls volleyball team is 2-4 heading into the third week of this season. Senior setter Brittney Poole has gotten off to a good start. She leads the Blue Devils with 39 assists and 15 service aces. MRH’s top hitters thus far have been sophomore Mariah Russell, who leads the team with 22 kills, and senior Amber Sinclair, who’s second on the team with 19 kills. This week, the Devils have three matches scheduled. On Tuesday, they’ll host Valley Park, they’ll play at Normandy on Wednesday and on Friday MRH hosts Brentwood. Standout Brandi Allen has graduated, but coach Cheryl Carmon still expects Maplewood Richmond Heights to compete for a district title.
The Maplewood Richmond Heights volleyball team went 22-11 last year, a vast improvement from its 12-14 mark in 2009 and 4-21 in the 2008 season. Hitter Brandi Allen had a lot to do with that turnaround, and the Blue Devils are facing this season without Allen. “Brandi was great at both offense and defense, and we will feel her absence in both areas,” head coach Cheryl Carmon said. Carmon added that they won’t be using a libero—a type of defensive specialist—this season.
