Men Smashed Window, Stole $1,045 in Cigarettes From Gas Station, Police Say

Vincent Granderson, of Webster Groves, is charged with burglary and felony theft in the break-in at the Conoco gas station on Big Bend Boulevard.

A man is charged with breaking into a Maplewood gas station and stealing 42 cartons of cigarettes May 12. Vincent Granderson, 48, of the 7800 block of South Big Bend Boulevard in Webster Groves, was charged Thursday with second-degree burglary and felony theft. Maplewood Police said Granderson is shown on security video, acting with another person in burglarizing the Maplewood Fuel Mart at 3600 South Big Bend Blvd. A large rock was thrown through the glass front door and Granderson and an accomplice then stuffed 42 cigarette cartons into a trash bag and fled. Blame the Victim? Do We Encourage Burglaries?

A couple of readers debate whether victims bear any responsibility for crime. What do you think?

In Des Peres last week, a handful of cars and homes were burglarized in a residential neighborhood—a serious enough "spree" that the city blasted an email and text alert to the neighborhoods. As it happens, the burglar got into some unlocked cars, used the garage door opener and walked into a pair of houses in which the inside door was not locked. The report brought on this comment from a reader: "A person would not lock their car outside overnight (or anytime) because? And with a home garage door opener and valuables inside? Is this laziness or stupidity?" Another reader who said she was was one of the victims took offense: "I hope you are never a victim. You are acting like it was our fault." What do you think? Do we bear any …

Agreed. Just because a thief or vandal else clearly does wrong, does not mean the victim is necessarily "right" or blameless. It also doesn't mean they have equal blame or most of it. Such black and white thinking on this board. Sometimes victims couldn't have done anything better. Sometimes we can all learn something from the situation...like locking things up and keeping valuables out of sight.   more ›

Maplewood Woman Charged in Three University City Burglaries

University City Police said Breeanna E. Eaton and another person broke into three U City homes in February and March.

A Maplewood woman is accused of participating in three burglaries in University City in February and March. Breeanna E. Eaton, 27, of the 7600 block of Jerome Avenue in Maplewood, was charged Monday with three counts of second-degree burglary, two counts of felony stealing and one count of misdemeanor stealing. University City Police said Eaton and another person entered three U City homes and stole several items: Police said Eaton went to each of the three locations with another person, allowed her car to be used in the burglaries and shared in money gained from selling the items. Richmond Heights Man Charged With 3 Counts of Second-Degree Burglary

Myron Whiters is serving a seven-year sentence for a Fenton burglary, and now faces additional charges for thefts in Chesterfield.

A 51-year-old man is accused of burglarizing four Chesterfield businesses in 2012. Myron Whiters, of the 1500 block of Banneker Avenue in Richmond Heights was charged April 10 with three counts of second-degree burglary and misdemeanor theft. On Monday, Whiters was charged with an additional second-degree burglary and misdemeanor theft charge. Chesterfield Police said Whiters broke into three suites at 16020 Swingley Ridge Road between 7:30 p.m. Aug. 21 and 8:30 a.m. Aug. 22. Police said he entered Prospect Infosys Inc., American Family Insurance and Solutions Counseling Associates. Whiters stole a laptop from Solutions Counseling, according to a police report. Chesterfield Police said Whiters also broke into an office building at 16476 …

Maplewood Teen Charged With Another Sexual Assault

Timothy Gilbert, 18, faces charges of burglary and sexual assault.

A Maplewood teen already jailed on charges of sneaking into a home and raping a girl under the age of 16 now faces charges in another similar attack.  Timothy Gilbert, 18, of the 7300 block of Kensington Avenue, had been charged with kidnapping, forcible rape, attempted forcible sodomy, sex abuse, burglary, theft and armed criminal action. According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Gilbert was charged Friday in a burglary and knifepoint attack in the early morning hours of Dec. 14 in the 4000 block of Walsh Street. Gilbert also was charged in January with burglary. Police said he broke into a home in the 5200 block of Holly Hills Avenue early New Year’s Day. Police: Woman Raids Maplewood Home to Steal Safe, Jewelry, Electronics

A St. Louis woman has been charged with burglary and theft in the incident.

A woman was charged with burglarizing a Maplewood home, stealing a safe, computer, electronics and other items. Ceara N. Goudy, 21, of the 3200 block of Henrietta Avenue in South St. Louis, was charged Jan. 17 with second-degree burglary and felony theft. Maplewood Police said Goudy and another woman entered a home in the 7500 block of Comfort Avenue between 7:45 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Nov. 9. Police said she and another woman stole a gold wedding band, two watches, two gold necklaces, a Cornwell diagnostic computer, a digital camera and a safe that contained cash and personal documents. Maplewood Man Faces Charge in Burglary on McCready

Maplewood Police said Amishaddai Johnson broke into a home while the owner was home.

A second man faces criminal charges after police said he broke into a home Sept. 7. Amishaddai J. Johnson, 25, of the 7700 block of West Bruno Avenue in Maplewood, was charged Saturday with first-degree burglary. Another man previously was charged in the same burglary. Maplewood Police said Johnson broke into a house in the 2000 block of McCready Avenue about 8:21 p.m. Sept. 7 while the resident was home. A police report said he intended to steal from the home. Police: Man Stole $480 in Maplewood Burglary on McReady Ave.

The accused told the victim he was trying to chase a burglar from the home.

A man faces criminal charges in a Sept. 7 burglary in the 2000 block of McReady Avenue in Maplewood. Corey Buie, 34, of the 1200 block of Rockbridge Place in Kirkwood, was charged with first-degree burglary and stealing. Maplewood Police said Buie stole $480 from the home on McReady. Buie told the victim’s son he was in the home, but he was trying to chase the burglar out. The victim told police Buie participated in the burglary. Bond was set at $50,000, cash only. Men Caught Pilfering Copper on Sunnen Property, Police Say

Police said a witness saw the men enter the house, and police caught them as they left.

Two men face criminal charges after police said they tried to steal copper pipe from a Maplewood home almost a year ago. The home was in an area slated for demolition for the Mini Cooper dealership. Maplewood Police said a witness saw the men entering the home, in the 3000 block of Coleman Avenue on Oct. 29, 2011. Police caught them as they were leaving the home with copper pipe. A police report said the back door had been kicked in. Alvin Jefferson, 36, of the 10300 block of Ashbrook in Bellefontaine Neighbors, and L.B. Robinson, 50, of the 7100 block of Michigan Avenue in St. Louis, were charged Tuesday with second-degree burglary and misdemeanor stealing. Second Man Charged in Maplewood Burglary on Gerhard Ave.

Police said the accused and another man stole a washer and dryer from the house.

A second man was charged in a Feb. 19 burglary at a Maplewood home in the 2500 block of Gerhard Avenue. Terry Tucker, 54, of the 3200 block of Liberty Street in South St. Louis, was charged Friday with second-degree burglary and stealing. Richard Heberer, 44, of the 2500 block of Gerhard in Maplewood, also was charged with the burglary in April. Maplewood police said in a report that Tucker and Heberer stole a washer and dryer from the house sometime between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Feb. 19. The items were valued at about $800. The owner was in the process of moving out of the home and a tenant was moving in when the burglary took place. Bond for Tucker was set at $15,000.
