The Thanksgiving holiday falls as early as possible because November begins with a Thursday. You'll have more time to Christmas shop if "Black Friday" is the official start.
Some residents and businesses will start stringing up the Christmas lights as soon as the Halloween decorations come down, but hardcore shoppers know when their dream season begins. Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, has become the accepted if unofficial start time of the Christmas rush. It's a huge day for retailers but only the first of a roughly month-long extravaganza. And thanks to Abe Lincoln, who decreed Thanksgiving a national holiday, Franklin D. Yes, it's still a little early to think about Christmas shopping. I understand. But it's coming up soon. And we all know that one person who is extremely hard to buy for. What do you do?
I will make no apology for this edition of our weekly "Conversation Starter." I'm selfishly motivated by the need for your help. And I don't care that Halloween is still three days away. Or that Christmas is still nearly two months off. We need all the time we can get. See, here's the problem: My father is in his early 70s; my father-in-law is in his early 80s. If anything, they're trying to get rid of things. What do you buy for the hard-to-buy-for? What do you do to make the Christmas merry for the folks who seem to have everything, don't need anything or who won't let themselves get pinned down? Here's another stumper for you: My son is 17. He's a drama kid, a singer, a World of Warcraft fanatic. He is every bit as hard to buy for as my…

Wondering what to do with your tree now that Christmas is over? The St. Louis County Department of Health has some ideas about reusing and recycling.
Christmas trees are objects of beauty and cheer—until Dec. 26, that is, when they can become a chore for families wondering what to do with them now that Christmas is over. The St. Louis County Department of Health has a few environmentally friendly ideas for what to do with your tree: If you live on or near a few acres of open land, use your live tree to create a wildlife habitat. Place the tree in a field as cover for small animals or submerge the tree in a pond or lake for a fish habitat. Do not dump the tree in a ravine or along an eroding bank. If you’re feeling crafty, use the branches to decorate or make wreaths for your home, keeping the holiday spirit alive even after Christmas. When you are ready to dispose of your tree but you…
