Kakao Chocolate Inspires Custom Dyed Yarn

Kakao Chocolate in Maplewood sells Dyeabolical's hand-dyed yarn inspired by the Kakao logo.

Kakao Chocolate, Pudd’nhead Books and other local businesses are the inspiration for the newest colors at hand-dyed yarn shop Dyeabolical, and it all started—as the best things do—with chocolate. Rachel Kluesner, a Shrewsbury resident who describes herself as an “indie dyer” of yarns, was selling her wares at the Missouri History Museum a few years ago when Brian Pelletier, owner of Kakao Chocolate, asked to buy a one-of-a-kind color that matched his company’s logo. Pelletier’s mother knit the yarn into what he calls his “chocolate scarf,” which he now wears “all the time,” Kluesner said. Later, Traveling Tea owner Katerie Meyer asked Kluesner for two unique yarn colors, one to match her own shop’s logo and another as a gift for Queen’s …

World's Top Cheese Available at Maplewood Farmers Market

Baetje Farms—available at Saturday's Maplewood Winter Market and Holiday Fair—had a cheese named one of the top 16 cheeses in the world at the World Cheese Awards 2011 in Birmingham, UK.

Bloomsdale cheese from artisan farmstead dairy farm Baetje Farms beat out 2,700 cheeses from 35 countries to become one of the top 16 cheeses in the world. Owners Steve and Veronica Baetje took Bloomsdale and several other cheeses to the World Cheese Awards 2011 in Birmingham, United Kingdom, where they won a super gold award, four silvers and a bronze for their artisan cheeses, according to Feast Magazine. Of the 50 super gold winners, judges selected 16—including Baetje's Bloomsdale—as top in the world. Picked up some of their cheese for a special dish for Christmas Eve. Also got some nice soaps from other vendors at the Schlafly Farmers' Market while I was there. I plan on making gift baskets with other great local stuff like Crown Candy chocolate covered blueberries and G&W Landjaeger. Forget about the boring box stores.   more ›
