The tax levy could be rolled back when current TIF projects are paid off.
The Brentwood School District will ask Brentwood taxpayers for more money in the April 2 general election. Proposition K would increase the school district operating tax levy ceiling by 75 cents. That's about $83 per $100,000 of home value over the 2012 taxes levied. Based on the 2011 assessed values, the median home value in Brentwood was about $160,000. Prop K would add $133 over the 2012 taxes, or about $11 per month. Brentwood Superintendent of Schools David Faulkner said declining property valuations are the reason. He said values went down for the first time in 2009. Among St. Louis County school districts, the three highest tax rate increases on a percentage basis were in Bayless, Ladue and Brentwood. Voters in Bayless approved a 28 percent tax rate increase, while Ladue voters approved a tax rate hike of 17 percent. Superintendent Faulkner has been taking his message to teachers and parents, trying to help them understand what has happened and what is being done about it.
The Brentwood School District has tried to make budget cuts away from students.
The Brentwood School District has taken a financial hit, with first-ever receding property values in 2009 and 2011. Superintendent David Faulkner is new this year. He was the assistant superintendent before that, so he knew what he was getting into. He said the district has made cuts in every area, and have been careful to target those cuts far away from students. Approximately 93 percent of the school district’s funding comes from Brentwood tax revenues, with the remaining 7 percent from county, state, and federal sources, superintendent David Faulkner said in an email to Patch. Patch also met with Faulkner in his office on Oct. 26 to talk about the district’s finances. A previous article covered the school district’s financial situation…

New Brentwood School District superintendent David Faulkner inherited a district in the black, but only thanks to a $739,000 budget cut the school board made in February of this year. Then superintendent, Charlie Penberthy, explained the situation in a March 9 Patch article. In a meeting with Patch on Oct. 28, Faulkner, said he knew what he was getting into when he took the job. He’s been meeting with Brentwood School District staff members and PTOs for the past six months, explaining the situation. "We have been addressing the situation for the last three years," Faulkner said. "Our revenues have followed the direction of the economy, but unfortunately, our expenses have not been as flexible." He said the staff has heard it before, but it…

Both the new superintendent and the assistant superintendent make less than the same positions last year.
Brentwood School District is saving a bit of money on salaries for its highest-level administrators this year. New Superintendent of Schools for Brentwood, David Faulkner, is making $150,000 this year. That's compared to Dr. Charles Penberthy's salary of $218,160 when he left the position. Faulkner started the job on July 1. New assistant superintendent Dr. Joan Oakley's salary is $134,000. When Faulkner was assistant last year his salary was $137,746. Faulkner said salaries trend with both the position and the years of experience. He said for Oakley's, the Cooperating School District provides a comparisson of salaries in the county, and they set her salary based on that.
