Farewell From Your Former Patch Editor

Ryan Martin accepted a new role with Patch, but leaves the site in good hands.

My friends, I'm excited to inform you that Doug Miner has taken over as editor of Maplewood-Brentwood Patch. He became the site's editor effective last Thursday. I've accepted a new role with Patch. As an associate regional editor in St. Louis, I'll be working closely with editors from University City, Clayton-Richmond Heights, South County and Arnold to continue bringing great local news, events and information to the different communities. And, of course, I'll still work with Doug in Maplewood-Brentwood. It's been about 16 months since you and I launched Maplewood-Brentwood Patch together. I've grown immensely proud of the website we created in these two communities that have been traditionally underserved by other media outlets. Both …

Maplewood-Brentwood Patch receives a shoutout from a Brentwood resident on "St. Louis on the Air."

Last week, I learned that St. Louis Public Radio's local news and talk show, St. Louis on the Air, would run an hour-long segment on the role of community newspapers in the digital age. I'm (obviously) a big fan of newspapers and an even bigger fan (obviously) of local news. So I tuned in.  When host Don Marsh opened the lines for callers, "David from Brentwood" had some of the nicest things to say about what we're doing on Patch. "It is, without a doubt, the best thing out there for keeping people informed," he said. "Six months ago, I didn't even know what Twitter was, and now I have it set up so whenever the gentleman who runs the Brentwood Maplewood one posts something, I get notification of that." Editor's Notebook: My Take on the Missouri Sunshine Law

Save the money and hassle by giving public records away free of charge.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I want to acknowledge my personal feelings regarding access to public records. The Brentwood Board of Aldermen again faced scrutiny on Monday night for its interpretation of the Missouri Sunshine Law. The law, which is enforced by the attorney general's office, was created to guarantee the public's right to access public documents. It's nothing new in Brentwood. Residents were upset in October about the city's interpretation of the sunshine law. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch and Brentwood were involved in a lawsuit in August over the city's interpretation of the sunshine law.
