MRH Defeats Visiting Caruthersville to Advance to Semis

A slow start leads to a momentum shift and a quarterfinal win for the Devils.

Maplewood Richmond Heights football once again won a game that had the Blue Devils fans on the edge of their seats. MRH (11-2) was down 13-0 early, but rallied to finish with a 36-29 Class 2 state quarterfinal win over Caruthersville (11-2). (More photos are available on our Blue Devils Facebook page at www.facebook.com/MRHBlueDevils) Combined, there were eight fumbles, and MRH accounted for five of those. It was an MRH fumble on the second possession that led to the Tigers’ first score, when Elbie Fonda ran 40 yards to score less than halfway into the quarter. Fonda had 31 touchdowns on the year, and at first it looked like he was going to have his way with the Devils. He scored again from scrimmage, then ran a kickoff all the way back …

MRH Sweeps District Football With Win Over Lift for Life

Devils score touchdowns in five different ways in blowout victory of St. Louis charter school.

The Maplewood Richmond Heights football team finished off the 2011 regular season and clinched the MSHSAA Class 2 District 4 championship in grand style Thursday night, with a whopping 75-6 win over the Lift for Life Academy of St. Louis. The Blue Devils, who are now 8-2 this season and remain the highest-ranked St. Louis-area team in Class 2 at No. 7 in the state, earned themselves a berth in the state playoffs, which begin on Wednesday, November 2, and the right to host that game, which will be against the runner-up team from District 3.  The Class 2 District 3 championship will be settled on Saturday, when Principia High School hosts Brentwood at 1 p.m. The winner of that game will get a home playoff game next Wednesday, while the loser…

MRH Wins in Blowout Effort Over Fredericktown

Devils score four fourth-quarter touchdowns to pull away from fired up Fredericktown squad.

FREDERICKTOWN — The Maplewood Richmond Heights football team won its third straight game, and improved to 5-2 on the season, with a 48-12 win Friday night at Fredericktown High School. The Blue Devils actually trailed 6-0 early in the first quarter, after a 49-yard touchdown run by the home team’s Jake Korokis. But MRH quarterback Kahlid Hagens threw two long touchdown passes, a 55-yarder to Karon Thomas and a 46-yarder to Cortland Brooks, to give the Devils a 14-6 lead at halftime. In the second half, Hagens got the ball rolling again with another touchdown pass (10-yards to Aaron Collins) to make the score 20-6 for the visitors. But the key play in the game was a 35-yard punt return for a score by Kashon Hagens that, along with a two-…

Blue Devils Win Big in Away Saturday Game

MRH blanks Perryville with seven touchdowns and a field goal.

Maplewood Richmond Heights football played 80 miles south in Perryville, MO, on Saturday afternoon, and came home with a 52-0 win. When contacted by phone, MRH coach Brandon Gregory said that everyone on his team was involved in the win. Sophomores Karon Thomas and Cortland Brooks, junior Kahlid Hagens and freshman Elijah Keely all made it into the end zone. Stats from the game weren't immediately available, but Gregory will record the stats after the coaches watch film of the game (which we will pass on to you, of course). Senior kicker John Barron hit a 42-yard field goal, which just missed breaking the Perryville field record by a yard. He was a perfect seven-for-seven on his point-after conversions. They were up 38-0 at halftime. When …

MRH Football to Face Perryville in Saturday Day Game

The Devils hope to spoil the 4A Pirates homecoming.

The Blue Devils take their 3-2 record down to Perryville on Saturday. It's MRH's third road game of the season. The Pirates (1-4) have lost to Herculaneum 8-27, De Soto 7-52, Park Hills Central 7-42 and Fredericktown 0-19. In their only win, the Pirates barely snuck past Potosi 35-34. “I think we are better than our record indicates,” Perryville defensive coordinator Joel Sumner said. “We’re a young team. Our program has been down for the last few years, and so we’re trying to instill the fact that we need to be competitive for four quarters.” (Blue Devils fans, join your friends and alumni on our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/MRHBlueDevils) Sumner said they have a couple decent running backs and their basic offense is to run the ball. “…

Conditioning Was Key for MRH Football's Win

The Blue Devils proved they could last a whole game on defense, shutting down the Rebels in the second half.

At 2-2, and in front of hundreds of Maplewood Richmond Heights alumni at the game for homecoming, the Blue Devils were looking for a win any way they could. They found it against Park Hills Central, winning 31-6, scoring with passing, rushing and a 39-yard field goal. The win puts MRH at 3-2 and leaves the Park Hills Central Rebels at the opposite: 2-3. “Defense finished,” MRH coach Brandon Gregory said. He was referring to last week’s game against Ste. Genevieve when MRH was up 19-0 at the half but lost 25-26. (A photo gallery from the game is available on our Blue Devils Facebook page: www.facebook.com/MRHBlueDevils) The Devils worked extra hard on conditioning during the week and it paid off. “Nobody cramped up,” he said. “When you’re …

MRH Wins in Front of Homecoming Crowd

The Devils faced Park Hills Central, a team with an identical 2-2 record, and came out on top.

Park Hills Central may have come to Maplewood Richmond Heights to spoil the Blue Devil homecoming game, but the Rebels didn’t come close. MRH coach Brandon Gregory had an extra emphasis on conditioning the week before the game, and it paid off. The Blue Devils were up 14-6 at the half and finished strong right up to their final field goal with 1:39 left in the game, winning 31-6. (Blue Devils fans — more photos are available on our MRH Blue Devils Facebook page: www.facebook.com/MRHBlueDevils) MRH held the Rebels on the first possession, stopping them after 14 plays. The MRH defense closed up the middle, which has been the Rebel’s bread and butter. On the first Blue Devils' possession, a 30-yard pass play from junior quarterback Kahlid …

MRH Hosts Park Hills Central for Homecoming

The Rebels have a 2-2 record, just like the Blue Devils, but also share very high expectations.

Park Hills Central football coach Kory Schweiss said he really doesn’t know how good of a team he has yet. “We beat two teams that aren’t real good, and we lost to two (better) teams,” he said.  On Friday, the Blue Devils will play the Rebels at Maplewood Richmond Heights for a homecoming game that is expected to be well-attended. MRH coach Brandon Gregory was blunt about last week’s disappointing 25-26 loss to Ste. Genevieve. “To be honest with you, I think it came from conditioning,” he said. “When you’re tired and your mental game is not right, you’re going to drop the ball, you’re going to miss your assignment, so we’re going to take pride in getting in shape. “I’m the track coach, so there shouldn’t be an excuse,” he said. “So this …

MRH Leaves Ste. Genevieve Frustrated After Blowing Big Lead

The Blue Devils shut out Ste. Genevieve in the first half, only to lose at the end, 26-25.

The Dragons from Ste. Genevieve must have heard one heck of a halftime speech in their  home game against Maplewood Richmond Heights. Other than a last-minute MRH score in the fourth quarter, the Dragons dominated the Blue Devils in the second half, winning 26-25 in a conference matchup. “We didn’t finish and they capitalized,” MRH coach Brandon Gregory said. “We still gave ourselves a chance and didn’t finish there at the end.” The entire first half felt like the perfect fall football night on the MRH side of the field. But the night ended much like its week one loss to MICDS. (Check out complete photos from the game on our new Blue Devils Facebook page: www.facebook.com/MRHBlueDevils) Ste. Genevieve won the toss and chose to receive, but…

MRH Football to Face Potent Offense on Friday

Ste. Genevieve's quarterback is a three-year starter who can throw the long ball.

Maplewood Richmond Heights football will travel south on Friday for the second time in two weeks in the Blue Devils' game against Ste. Genevieve (2-1). (Keep updated with real-time stats from the game on our new Blue Devils Facebook page: www.facebook.com/MRHBlueDevils. We'll have reaction and photos from the game on Friday and Saturday too.) The Ste. Genevieve Dragons lost to Dexter 6-28, then beat no. 1 ranked and class 1 state champion Valle Catholic 38-27, and last week defeated Fredericktown 46-20. The preseason talk was that either MRH or Ste. Genevieve would win the conference title, and MRH coach Brandon Gregory said that after watching film of the Dragons in action, MRH had better be ready to defend against the pass. “They run a …
