Small Folks Enjoy a Small Folk Concert

The Folk School of St. Louis held a children's concert last night.

The Folk School of St. Louis in Maplewood held a concert for children Friday night, and the crowd wasn't large, but definitely enthusiastic. A teacher at the school, Jacob Alspach, sang a variety of songs while playing a guitar. Carolyn Trachtova of Webster Groves brought her daughters–one is a student of Alspach's. "One of the funnest evenings we've had for a long time," she said. Jim Maus came from Waterloo, IL, with his daughter, Grace. "I thought it'd be a good time for Grace to come over and sing and stomp and clap," Maus said. The girls grabbed the microphone after Alspach finished his set, and the lyrics "Who let the dogs out? Who? Who?" replaced the folk songs, but stomping and clapping continued.

Folk School Builds Community Through Music

The mission of Maplewood’s Folk School is to teach and perpetuate traditional music and folk arts, but the school is also uniting a musical community.

The Folk School of St. Louis builds community one class and one performance at a time.  The non-profit school—dedicated to promoting the "learning, teaching, reneewal and perpetuation of traditional music and folk arts"—has been teaching people to make great music and have fun doing it since 2001. But the Folk School is doing more than teaching music. It's building a community of people who love to make old-time and bluegrass music, and it's forging a greater bond with the city. "We try to work with Maplewood," Executive Director Clinton M. Shurtz said. "Maplewood really tries hard to have events where the small businesses come out and do things." That was evident a couple of weeks ago when the school provided dozens of fiddlers (and other…
