MRH Announces MSHSAA Award of Excellence Athletes

John Barron and Amber Sinclair are the honored students from MRH.

Maplewood Richmond Heights School District reports that the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) has awarded MRH seniors John Barron and Amber Sinclair each an Award of Excellence for exemplary display of sportsmanship, ethics and integrity. Barron and Sinclair were chosen by MRH coaches; Malcolm Hill, athletic director; and administrators. Amber Sinclair "Amber was given this award because of her excellent leadership skills," Hill said. "She's an outstanding leader in the classroom and on the volleyball court. She was a volleyball captain, and she carries a high GPA - above 3.5, and she's one of the main reasons our volleyball team won a district championship this year. "She's the definition of student-athlete," Hill…

John Barron Named St. Louis Post-Dispatch Scholar Athlete for MRH

Barron led the league in scoring in soccer, then played football for the first time.

Maplewood Richmond Heights senior John Barron has been named the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Scholar Athlete for the 2011-2012 school year for MRH. Athletic success and academic performance for the past four years are considered in the decision. Barron led the Blue Devils soccer team with 39 goals and 11 assists in his senior year. Then for the first time in his life he played football, starting as a placekicker. He averaged almost 50 yards a kickoff. He's planning on studying biology at Missouri State, and thinking about walking on the football team to kick. "Hopefully I'll be able to earn a scholarship," he said. "If kicking doesn't work out, I'm hoping to go back to Spain for sophomore year." He spent most of the previous summer in Spain, …

Martin Scores Lone MRH Goal in Season-Ending Loss to Bayless

Maplewood Richmond Heights' season ends in district championship.

*Correction: An earlier version of this article incorrectly identified who scored MRH's goal. We are very sorry for the error. The performance of Sam Martin* was the one bright spot in a 8-1 Maplewood Richmond Heights loss to Bayless on Thursday night. Martin, a senior, scored the lone goal for MRH. The Blue Devils (8-16-1) lost the district championship and finished its year as the fourth-place team in the South Central Athletic Association standings. Bayless proved to be too much for MRH. The Bronchos (20-4-1) boys soccer team stormed its way to its second straight district championship with the win. “It was a tough night for us,” MRH head coach Chris Meyer said. “It should’ve been a little closer, I think. But they’re a really good team…

It might have been a closer game had the referees called penalties on both teams and not just Maplewood. Very poor performance by the referees.   more ›

MRH Wins Postseason Game Without Head Coach

Brandon Gregory has been suspended for the season, but his team stayed focused.

Motivation didn’t seem to be a problem Wednesday night for the Maplewood Richmond Heights football team. The Devils rolled visiting Principia 38-0 in the first playoff game of the postseason, improving the Blue Devils' overall record to 9-2. Principia’s season ended at 2-8. (More photos are available on our Blue Devils Facebook page at www.facebook.com/MRHBlueDevils) The Blue Devils were playing their third game without head coach Brandon Gregory. It came out today that Gregory was suspended without pay on Oct. 18 for an incident with a student, and will be gone for the remainder of the season. Assistant coach Sterling Finney was in command, and said the team is taking Gregory’s suspension as an opportunity to teach overcoming adversity. “…

Soccer Districts Start for MRH, Brentwood

Brentwood's season ended in districts but MRH begins play on Tuesday night.

Maplewood Richmond Heights soccer star John Barron is now fourth in the area in scoring with 32 goals and 8 assists for the Blue Devils this year. He and teammate Sam Martin (21 goals, 12 assists) make up one of the most dangerous tandems in the state, and will also look to showcase their skills when district play begins for the Devils on Tuesday night against Cleveland NJROTC. MRH, which is the host school in Class 1 District 2, is the No. 2 seed in the district, and would take on South Central Athletic Association champion and No. 1 seed Bayless, in a potentially exciting district championship game on Thursday at 6:15 p.m. Brentwood, one of the few teams that began district play over the weekend, saw its season end with a 7-0 loss to …

Blue Devils Win Big in Away Saturday Game

MRH blanks Perryville with seven touchdowns and a field goal.

Maplewood Richmond Heights football played 80 miles south in Perryville, MO, on Saturday afternoon, and came home with a 52-0 win. When contacted by phone, MRH coach Brandon Gregory said that everyone on his team was involved in the win. Sophomores Karon Thomas and Cortland Brooks, junior Kahlid Hagens and freshman Elijah Keely all made it into the end zone. Stats from the game weren't immediately available, but Gregory will record the stats after the coaches watch film of the game (which we will pass on to you, of course). Senior kicker John Barron hit a 42-yard field goal, which just missed breaking the Perryville field record by a yard. He was a perfect seven-for-seven on his point-after conversions. They were up 38-0 at halftime. When …

Conditioning Was Key for MRH Football's Win

The Blue Devils proved they could last a whole game on defense, shutting down the Rebels in the second half.

At 2-2, and in front of hundreds of Maplewood Richmond Heights alumni at the game for homecoming, the Blue Devils were looking for a win any way they could. They found it against Park Hills Central, winning 31-6, scoring with passing, rushing and a 39-yard field goal. The win puts MRH at 3-2 and leaves the Park Hills Central Rebels at the opposite: 2-3. “Defense finished,” MRH coach Brandon Gregory said. He was referring to last week’s game against Ste. Genevieve when MRH was up 19-0 at the half but lost 25-26. (A photo gallery from the game is available on our Blue Devils Facebook page: www.facebook.com/MRHBlueDevils) The Devils worked extra hard on conditioning during the week and it paid off. “Nobody cramped up,” he said. “When you’re …

MRH Wins in Front of Homecoming Crowd

The Devils faced Park Hills Central, a team with an identical 2-2 record, and came out on top.

Park Hills Central may have come to Maplewood Richmond Heights to spoil the Blue Devil homecoming game, but the Rebels didn’t come close. MRH coach Brandon Gregory had an extra emphasis on conditioning the week before the game, and it paid off. The Blue Devils were up 14-6 at the half and finished strong right up to their final field goal with 1:39 left in the game, winning 31-6. (Blue Devils fans — more photos are available on our MRH Blue Devils Facebook page: www.facebook.com/MRHBlueDevils) MRH held the Rebels on the first possession, stopping them after 14 plays. The MRH defense closed up the middle, which has been the Rebel’s bread and butter. On the first Blue Devils' possession, a 30-yard pass play from junior quarterback Kahlid …

MRH Football to Face Potent Offense on Friday

Ste. Genevieve's quarterback is a three-year starter who can throw the long ball.

Maplewood Richmond Heights football will travel south on Friday for the second time in two weeks in the Blue Devils' game against Ste. Genevieve (2-1). (Keep updated with real-time stats from the game on our new Blue Devils Facebook page: www.facebook.com/MRHBlueDevils. We'll have reaction and photos from the game on Friday and Saturday too.) The Ste. Genevieve Dragons lost to Dexter 6-28, then beat no. 1 ranked and class 1 state champion Valle Catholic 38-27, and last week defeated Fredericktown 46-20. The preseason talk was that either MRH or Ste. Genevieve would win the conference title, and MRH coach Brandon Gregory said that after watching film of the Dragons in action, MRH had better be ready to defend against the pass. “They run a …

MRH Overwhelms Brentwood With Ground Attack

Blue Devils run score to 45-0 in the first half, then the junior varsity offense adds 10 more in the second.

A dominant Maplewood Richmond Heights performance on Friday night prevented the Brentwood Eagles from scoring a single point. The Blue Devils (1-1) tallied 55 points while holding Brentwood (0-2) to 0 in a shutout game at MRH High School. “Our guys came out and flew around like we wanted them to,” MRH coach Brandon Gregory said. “For the most part they did what (defensive coach) Coach Kime asked them to do and everything went the right way.” ("Like" our brand new Brentwood Eagles and MRH Blue Devils Facebook pages to view photo galleries from the game — www.facebook.com/MRHBlueDevils and www.facebook.com/BrentwoodEagles) MRH junior Wes Williams, who finished up last year as a quarterback, stepped in for freshman runningback Elijah Keely …

The focus should be on the game played and the efforts of the players instead of unfounded accusations. MRH staff puts a lot of time and effort into confirming residency. Other districts have huge issues with non-resident students sneaking in. MRH athletes are vetted over and over again and STILL these accusations persist. Let's give the players from both teams the respect and congratulations …   more ›
