Sorry Maplewood, you're left out of this one. Brentwood Ward 1 politics had the lead until the Sports Attic burned in the middle of the month, and grabbed the top three spots.
1. Sports Attic Burns in Early Morning Fire in Brentwood The owner and much of his family woke to the news on April 13 that the Sports Attic was burning. Many of them lived nearby, and gathered across Manchester Road as firefighters from almost a dozen departments fought the blaze. They entered the building when they arrived but retreated when they realized the floor was going to give way. The building couldn't be saved. 2. Sports Attic Owner Wants to Rebuild Sports Attic owner, Joe Droege, on the day of the fire, said he hoped to rebuild the business. Friend of the family, Jim Beck said they had watched world championships there. He said he was at the Sports Attic on its last night with manager Kevin Gallagher to watch a Blues game. Beck …

The anonymous campaign attacks have prompted Ward 1 Alderwoman Maureen Saunders to file a complaint with the Missouri Ethics Commission.
It's been a week since Brentwood voters elected three newcomers to the Board of Aldermen, but several questions remain unanswered regarding robocalls and anonymous letters sent to residents in Ward 1. The mysterious nature of the attacks worries Maureen Saunders, a first-time candidate who was elected to represent the ward on April 3. She was targeted by three anonymous letters, that stated, among other things, that she's a bully and narcissist. She plans to file with the Missouri Ethics Commission this week. "I am filing because I don't want another candidate to have such ugliness directed at them," stated Saunders in an email to Patch. Election laws state that backers of campaign material must be identified. Saunders believes the …

Saunders said her win is for everyone who signed the petition that brought about the state audit.
A huge turnout in Brentwood’s first ward gave accountant Maureen Saunders more votes than either Anthony Harper or Barbara Clements got in previous years running uncontested in the ward. Uncertified returns from The St. Louis County Board of Elections Tuesday night show Saunders defeating Jim Bischoff 366 votes to 186. That’s more than 66 percent of the votes cast. “It’s a big win for the residents,” she said. “Everybody that signed that petition, everybody that made their concerns known. It’s a team effort and we are all taking that seat.” Saunders is known in Brentwood for spearheading the signature drive that initiated a state audit of the city of Brentwood last August, following the resignation of city administrator Chris Seemayer for …

Brentwood residents talked about why they came out to vote during Tuesday's municipal election.
Ward 3 incumbent Andy Leahy also won re-election in an uncontested race.
In the first election since the string of controversies that rocked Brentwood in 2011, three newcomers are set to join the city's Board of Aldermen. Maureen Saunders (Ward 1), Cindy Manestar (Ward 2) and Patrick Toohey (Ward 4) all won seats on the board during Tuesday's municipal election. Andy Leahy, an incumbent in Ward 3, won an uncontested re-election bid. Each candidate was elected to a four-year term. (Get real-time updates about Brentwood City Hall and other news on our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/MaplewoodBrentwoodPatch) Saunders, who won with 66 percent of the votes cast in her ward, entered the public eye following two stories of financial mismanagement at city hall: former city administrator Chris Seemayer's theft of city …
One Brentwood aldermanic candidate called the low turnout disappointing.
Just after 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Jim Bischoff and Maureen Saunders shared a bench outside Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Brentwood, the polling place for Brentwood’s Ward 1. Voters started arriving as the sun rose, but not at a great pace. Ninety-five had voted by 9:30. Though Bischoff and Saunders said they were there for the day, family and supporters kept them going with trips to Subway and St. Louis Bread Co. While the candidates admitted that election day is long, they said they're happy it's finally here. “I’m glad it’s over, I think that’s the general consensus,” Bischoff said. The night before, Saunders had similar comments. “I don’t like the ugliness,” she said. Saunders said she was a little anxious about the election, which she …

The Ward 1 and Ward 4 seats are contested. Many are glad that the race is finally about to end.
There are two contested aldermanic races in Brentwood today: Ward 1 and Ward 4. In Ward 1 it’s Maureen Saunders against Jim Bischoff. Saunders, who spearheaded the effort to collect 1,000 signatures for a Missouri state audit of the city of Brentwood is running against Bischoff, who was asked by Mayor Pat Kelly to run against Saunders. Saunders wants to be on the board when the results of the state audit come back to help implement the suggestions. Bischoff got into the race because Kelly asked him if he would consider it. “I did, and here I am,” Bischoff said. “I just do volunteer; it’s part of what I do. It’s that simple,” he said. On March 10, a robocall survey went out to Ward 1, asking residents if they approved of the city’s handling…

He said if he were elected alderman of Brentwood's Ward 1 he'd investigate issues and vote his conscience.
Jim Bischoff lives on White Avenue, across from the high school. His wife liked the house, but he wasn’t sure about living right across from the school. Now, he likes being on the busy intersection. “We go to the football and basketball games,” he said. “Early in the morning and late in the afternoon there’s a little bit of traffic, but aside from that the kids are fine. It’s great.” He lives there with Susan, his wife of 19 years. That’s also how long they’ve lived in Brentwood. Their three teenagers go to Chaminade, Villa Duchene and CBC. They have a dog, Willie, who announces visitors. Bischoff grew up playing hockey. He learned to skate at the Brentwood Rec Center and taught his kids how to skate there. He said it makes him biased …

Missouri's 'Sunshine' law makes records of public governmental bodies open for inspection. Patch requested the voting records of all candidates for the Brentwood Board of Aldermen, and looked specifically at how often they voted in municipal elections.
Ward 4 aldermanic candidate Patrick Toohey last voted in a municipal election in 1999. Since then, Lorraine Krewson, also a Ward 4 candidate, voted in ten municipal elections. Among the seven Brentwood aldermanic candidates, Krewson gets the gold star for being a regular voter in municipal elections. She registered to vote in 1960, and since 1999, has missed only two municipal elections; in 2001 and ’03. Toohey registered in 1994, and since then, in municipal elections, voted only in 1999. Neither Krewson or Toohey returned messages Patch left for a comment. Gary S. Bierman, also a Ward 4 candidate, registered in 2007, and voted in the 2010 and '11 elections. He said he was a Brentwood alderman in the 1980s, then lived in the city of St. …

Todd Ingersoll has discovered a 2005 news story that all Brentwood residents should read. So should County Prosecutor Bob McCullough. The story concerns the sleazy deeds of Pat Kelly cronie Glenn Jamboretz. Turns out Jambo acted as a "political hit man" in St. Charles in 2004-2005 for a corrupt mayor and was associated with a group "that put out hate literature in an attempt to defeat city …   more ›
