Two hot-button topics will be discussed at the Brentwood Board of Aldermen meeting at the Recreation Complex at 6 p.m. June 11.
Brentwood Recreation Complex Brentwood mayor Pat Kelly asked the aldermen to discuss the future of Brentwood's Recreation Complex for 20 minutes at the May 21 meeting, which resulted in a much longer discussion with no consensus reached. The city considered bringing a $9 million bond issue to the voters last year to renovate the complex but it never got out of the ways and means committee. Alderman Keith Robertson had advocated for the bond issue last year. He was in favor of a plan to bring the building up to code, improve the ice rink, and add a fitness center and multi-use gym. Alderman Andrew Leahy was concerned that voters wouldn’t approve a bond issue in the midst of the down economy. He had voted against the proposal in April. …

Trina Petty-Rice will be stepping in for Karen Smith, who is retiring after this year.
Mark Twain Elementary Principal Karen Smith is retiring after this year and will be succeeded by Trina Petty-Rice, a principal in the Ladue School District. Knowing a new principal at Mark Twain will be stepping into big shoes, Maplewood-Brentwood Patch didn’t want to be the one to bring up the subject. But Petty-Rice took the opportunity in her first breath. She said she’s looking forward to continuing Smith’s legacy. “She is a phenomenal educator,” Petty-Rice said. “I’ll be going to a school of National Character, a school that is truly invested in children. It will allow me to have an opportunity to lead and share in the same vision.” Petty-Rice is an assistant principal at two elementary schools with a total of 900 students on a three-…

Fourteen Brentwood residents spoke during the public comment period of a Board of Aldermen meeting on Tuesday night.
Of the more than 100 people who attended a special meeting of the Brentwood Board of Aldermen on Tuesday, 14 spoke during the public comment period. None were happy about the present state of affairs in the city. In fact, many residents gave Mayor Pat Kelly and the city’s aldermen what could be construed as a cold shoulder. On the agenda that night? The launch of the state audit of Brentwood’s finances, and its related policies and procedures. Residents filled the chairs in the council chambers, stood along the aisles and spilled into the hallway. Purportedly, many came to the meeting after having received an invitational flier from Maureen Saunders, who spirited the successful petition prompting the audit, and who is now an aldermanic …

After twice being recognized as a Missouri School of Character, the Brentwood school gets the national nod.
Wednesday, the Character Education Partnership, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organization, named Mark Twain Elementary, a 2011 National School of Character (NSOC). Mark Twain was recognized for its exceptional performance in meeting standards of excellence established by the 11 Principles of Effective Character Education. Mark Twain is one of 43 schools nationwide recognized in 2011. The school was named a Missouri School of Character twice in the past, and this is its third attempt at applying for the national recognition, said Mark Twain principal Karen Smith. "We've been on this journey for about nine years," she said, "looking at creating an environment where the kids take an active role in leadership, where their voices are …

The school has receives the go-ahead to hire a second fifth grade teacher for next year.
Mark Twain Elementary School will soon increase its staff by one teacher. The Brentwood Board of Education voted to add another fifth grade teacher for the school at its meeting last month. Principal Karen Smith said a teacher was needed to help with the increasing student population. She said the school once had two teachers for every class, but smaller classes forced the school to offer fewer teachers. "The population has grown back," Smith said. "We've probably increased the population over the last three or four years by 30 or 40 students." While this year's fifth grade class has 20 students, next year's class will have 33, Smith said. The state sets standards for class sizes in Missouri public schools and requires Mark Twain to …

Buddies, families and safety patrol are part of a character education program that teaches responsibility and self-initiative.
If you sit down with a handful of Mark Twain Elementary School fifth-graders, you'll notice that each one is courteous to all of the others. Each speaks clearly and respectfully to the grown-up in the room who none of them has ever met. They have grown to become an integral part of the workings of their school. The students fulfill the task of talking with a visitor about their school—and their part in it—with adult-like responsibility, and that is no accident. "Responsibility" is a big word at Mark Twain Elementary. The school was recently awarded a Profile in Character award through the Character Education Partnership, a non-profit organization which advocates for character education in schools. The award was given to Mark Twain …

Insurance for the city official seems to be a given thing, but I agree that more transparency is needed. What the funds are used for, in what way, and how much funds are used all need to be transparent to the public. - http://www.insurescotland.com   more ›
