Three senior football players from Brentwood High School were named academic all-state.
The postseason recognition continues for Brentwood football players, who fought to a successful 10-2 season this past fall. Seniors Nick Featherston, David Rivera and Evan Sigler were named academic all-state. "We talk a lot about trying to excel in all areas of your life," said Coach Keith Herring in a Tuesday email to Patch. "Not only is school the most important aspect of being a student/athlete, but it will have an effect on your performance on the field. If you are not handling your business in an area such as academics, relationships and citizenship, it will creep into the athletic area in a negative manner." For Rivera, who played as a lineman on both sides of the ball, the awards keep piling on. He made 3rd Team Defensive Line on…

Herring's hiring was questioned, but his two seasons as coach quieted the critics.
Brentwood Eagles football coach Keith Herring has beat out the other nominee, Ward 1 Alderwoman Maureen Saunders with 66 percent of the vote, to be the Patch Brentwood Person of the Year for 2012. Herring was hired in March 2011 following the resignation of Scott Surgener and a hiring process that was unpopular and questioned by a Brentwood alderman, a school board member and many in the community. He wasn't the choice of a committee of school and community members. He went on to a 7-4 season in 2011 and 10-2 in 2012. "After coming to Brentwood under a cloud of dust, Coach Herring has taken a small group of under-sized pitbull atheletes as far as they can go," said his nominator. "He continues to inspire future generations to play Eagle…

The rivalry game was pushed up to 5:30 to hopefully avoid rain from Hurricane Isaac, but thunder delayed it, and everybody got wet anyway.
Neither Maplewood Richmond Heights nor Brentwood were happy following Friday’s matchup at Brentwood, but MRH was happier. They won. “Anytime you can win a football game 33-2, and our guys feel as if they lost, that’s a good thing, because they know what we’re capable of, they have yet to realize it,” MRH head coach Rich Nixon said. Rain from the remains of Hurricane Isaac made it just wet enough encourage three fumbles for each team, an errant MRH punt, and the ball to slip through MRH quarterback Kahlid Hagens’ hands to give Brentwood a safety. Brentwood was in scoring position three times but was stopped on every opportunity. “I thought we’d fight a little harder. I just didn’t see this many gunshots to the foot,” Bentwood head coach …

Now it's a week of work leading up to the game next week against MRH.
In a good night of Brentwood football, junior running back Jake Zivic lead the Eagles in rushing against Crystal City to a 42-6 win. Zivic finished with 107 rushing yards and senior Rekardo Owens added 82. See more photos from the game at Maplewood-Brentwood Facebook. (Like it!) Senior David Rivera lead the Brentwood tacklers with 9 solo tackles and 2 assists. Junior Josh Moreno had 4 solo and 4 assists and Wesley Sappington had 6 solos and 3 assists. Crystal City’s only score came as the result of a roughing the kicker that gave them back the ball. Head coach Keith Herring said the bad thing about a win is you they only get to enjoy it for a short wile, then they have to start of the next game. "They’re a good team," Hearring said of …

Brentwood football plays Maplewood Richmond Heights at home in the second game of the season.
When Brentwood plays Maplewood Richmond Heights at home in football in the second game of the season, on Aug. 31, two old Hazelwood foes will be facing each other. Brentwood’s Keith Herring is the past head coach for Hazelwood West, and MRH’s new head coach, Rich Nixon, came from Hazelwood Central. “I went against him when he was at Hazelwood Central,” Herring said. “What he’s going to do, I imagine will be pretty close to Hazelwood Central. We butted heads a few times.” See more Brentwood practice photos on Maplewood-Brentwood Patch Facebook. Not only that, but MRH line coach J.C. Kime was a line coach at Hazelwood Central, so Herring said he has some ideas on the Blue Devil defense too. Herring said he has lots of guys coming back who …

The club will raise money to make sure a trainer is at every game. They'll also feed the players a meal before and after games.
At last year’s Brentwood football banquet, coach Keith Herring suggested a booster club for the team. Bill Koster, the father of sophomore player Austin Koster, said he volunteered to head up the newly-formed Brentwood Booster Club. He said the main objective of the club is to take care of the safety of the team. “Because school budgets are cutting back, there’re a lot of things out there, like having trainers at every football game, especially at away games,” he said. It's the home team's responsibility to provide a trainer, in case of injury, but it doesn't always happen, Koster said. The club also plans on providing meals for the players before and after games. Lots of good volunteers stepped up for the club, Koster said. “Kristin Ruff …

The Eagles held the Blue Devils to 79 yards of offense but fell short in the end.
It was almost an “on any given Monday night” kind of game for Brentwood. The underdog Eagles held Maplewood Richmond Heights like no team has done all year, but in the end came up short. The Blue Devils finally found a way to overcome host Brentwood 7-0 in the sectional state playoff game. The Devils had beat the Eagles 55-0 in the second week of the regular season. With 3:15 left on the clock, MRH junior Aaron Spudich stripped the ball from Brentwood senior Danny Lynch. MRH junior Kahlid Hagens scooped up the ball and sprinted 80 yards for the game's first and only score. “Touchdown, that’s all I thought in my mind,” Hagens said. “Touchdown. The game is over.” "Kahlid is a super star," said MRH assistant coach Sterling Finney, who is …

The Eagles advance to the next round of the postseason after grabbing a late win against Carnahan on Wednesday night.
The game clock read 2:48 in the fourth quarter when Brentwood kicker Jake Caragher stood at the 17-yard line, waiting for the ball to be snapped. Caragher, a senior, kept telling himself that this kick was no different than an extra point. Never mind that Brentwood and Carnahan were tied 14-14 with the season on the line. Finally, the snap came, and the hold was perfect. Caragher powered the ball through the uprights, prompting the home Brentwood crowd to erupt in cheers. The 27-yard field goal would prove to be the deciding score in a game that featured an explosive first half but quiet second one. "I don't even know what to say right now," said a smiling Caragher after the game. "This is amazing. There is no other feeling." Have you '…
