MRH Graduates 78, Linda Henke Gives Last Address

A class that was called a family, by one speaker, graduated in the shadow of the MRH school building Friday evening.

Dr. Linda Henke, the retiring superintendent of the Maplewood Richmond Heights School District addressed a graduating class for the last time on Friday. She spoke to them about living a life of grace, which she defined as one with "connection, compassion and courage." Principal Kevin Grawer said that 100 percent of the 78 graduating seniors were headed to college, the armed services or a technical college, then went on to give many examples of students there who could have had an excuse not be graduating with their class, but overcame the hardship. Fire Departments, MRH Drama Students Act Out DWI Accident

The exercise is for the benefit of all the other MRH students, with proms and parties coming up this spring.

For the second year, Maplewood Richmond Heights High School students witnessed a DWI reenactment, complete with two cars smashed together in a head-on collision, the participation of the Maplewood and Richmond Heights fire departments and MRH drama students covered in stage blood. Maplewood fire chief Terry Merrell said with proms coming up, the point of the exercise is to get the students to think before they drink and drive. He said they did it last year, and will do it every year, until it’s no longer needed. “We make kids aware what could happen on prom night,” teacher Dave Grossman said. “A lot of times kids don’t have the perspective of what really goes on, and this helps bring out the surreal part of it.” See more photos at …

Rev. Billy Kyles Speaks in MRH District

The man who last spent time with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. before his assassination spoke to students in the Maplewood Richmond Heights School District on Thursday.

After his visit to Maplewood Richmond Heights High School on Thursday, civil rights leader Rev. Billy Kyles said he liked what he saw in the district. “You cannot come to this school and interact with people and walk through it, without feeling a real sense of togetherness,” he said. “It’s a joy for me to be here with them.” Kyles, 77, already knew MRH assistant principal Michael Maclin from Maclin’s trips to the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis. He had also heard Kyles preach in Monumental Baptist Church, where he’s been a pastor for 52 years. Maclin thought the MRH students should meet him too, and invited the minister to come to Maplewood. Kyles spent the day in the district. In the morning he spoke to the middle school and high …

Virtual Parenting: MRH Tech Night Covers Online Grades, Safety

Additionally, students at Maplewood Richmond Heights High School now have access to a help desk when they encounter computer problems.

Lisa Stevenson attended last Thursday's technology night at Maplewood Richmond Heights High School for a specific reason. "I want to know how to check my daughter's grades on my own, without her having to look them up for me," Stevenson said. She and other parents heard presentations from technology teacher David Grossman, technology integration specialist John Redden and Principal Kevin Grawer about issues such as reviewing students' coursework and upcoming assignments, monitoring their activity online and working with teachers. Online services called PowerSchool and Desire2Learn allow parents and students to monitor grades, track when coursework has been submitted, view interactive lesson plans, among other actions. PowerSchool's email …

MRH High Families Excited About New School Year

Principal Kevin Grawer hosted a meet-and-greet for Maplewood Richmond Heights families and staff Tuesday night.

There were some enthusiastic families at a back-to-school gathering in the Maplewood Richmond Heights High School cafeteria Tuesday night. Christy Scheidt said she was a little nervous, but mostly excited, about her son, Paul Meuser, starting ninth grade at MRH. Paul, who has been in the MRH School District since kindergarten, said he adapts easily to new routines and, importantly, knows when lunchtime happens. John and Rene Jones attended with their two daughters. Teeha is a freshman volleyball player and Tamara, a junior, is a cheerleader and “track star,” their father said. Both he and his wife graduated from MRH. They have been married for 16 years and love Maplewood, he said. “We bleed blue, not purple,” he said, referring to the MRH–…
