Maplewood Mayor James White gave a scenario at the Sept. 11 city council meeting of a male "convicted sexual pervert" opening shower curtains in a women's locker room if a law were passed prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. He said if it passed, that person would be protected. A Sept. 12 Patch article on the meeting prompted an article in the Riverfront Times on Sept. 13. The reporter called White for clarification on the ordinance, and he said the city manager said the document couldn't be released. An amendment to the city's code to include sexual orientation and gender identity regarding discrimination is to be tabled for the second meeting, despite the school board's position.
For the second meeting in a row, the Maplewood City Council has tabled an ordinance that would include sexual orientation and gender identity in various sections of the city's code regarding discrimination. The ordinance is on the agenda for the June 12 meeting, but the Public Agenda Notes for the meeting state that it is being requested to be tabled. Don't miss updates on this. Councilman Tim Dunn brought it to the city council, and it was on the May 22 agenda, but was tabled. Some Maplewood residents weren't happy about that.
Will Maplewood join some nearby communities and add gender identity and sexual orientation to its non-discrimination policies? Councilman Shawn Faulkingham said on his Facebook page on March 28, that he was interested in adding those specifics to Maplewood's non-discrimination policies.
