Cappies: MRH Production of 'Laramie Project' Is Honest, Reflective, Grave

A controversial production 'Laramie,' about the murder of a gay student in 1998, sparked a protest by fiercely anti-gay members of Westboro Baptist Church.

By Laurel Button of Mary Institute St. Louis Country Day School ANYTIME, ANYWHERE Open on a softly lit vignette of two actors: wood bars crisscrossing behind them, bridge just past a sheer frame. Everything about the opening of the show sets the theme; this play, THE LARAMIE PROJECT – performed by students and teachers at Maplewood Richmond Heights High School, is honest, reflective, and gravely serious. THE LARAMIE PROJECT is based on the real life murder of homosexual college student, Matthew Shepard, by two of his peers in the small town of Laramie, Wyoming. The show itself follows a series of true interviews conducted in Laramie, Wyoming by the playwright, Moisés Kaufman, and members of the original cast following Matthew’s murder. The…

MRH Football Takes the Long View, With High Expectations

Coach Rich Nixon said the team would like to beat MICDS in the first game, but that's not the most important thing.

Maplewood Richmond Heights new head coach Rich Nixon wasn't interested in talking about the Blue Devils' opening game agaisnt MICDS. The first game is Saturday at MICDS at 1:00. The Rams beat the Blue Devils in last year's opener 36-35 at MRH, but Nixon is looking farther downfield than the first game of the season. "The kids are excited to hit somebody else for sure, and you always want to erase those bad memories, there's no doubt about it, but we preach preparation for the end of the season," he said. The season record doesn't matter, he said. "It's all a matter of how good can we get by week 10," Nixon said. "That's really what our focus is." He said they won't be at playoff form early on. "We put so much in offensively and defensively…

Boys Hoops: Brentwood, MRH Prep for Holiday Tournaments

The teams went a combined 1-3 last week but look to rebound following a week away from games this week.

It was an entertaining week on the court for the two boys teams. The MRH Blue Devils went 1-2 in the always exciting Webster Classic last weekend, with losses in its first two games against SLUH and Marquette, and a final day win over Oakville. MRH is off this week, and actually doesn’t have any games scheduled until after Christmas. But when the Devils do get back to action, it’ll be quite a doozy, with MRH traveling down to Poplar Bluff to play in the Christmas tournament against a field that’ll include Memphis Hillcrest* – a 2009 Missouri state champion that features No. 1 national football recruit Dorial Green-Beckham. The Brentwood Eagles lost their only game of last week, 63-51 at Ladue, in a contest that was much closer than the …

High Stakes in MRH Football Opener

Maplewood Richmond Heights starts season at number one in preseason polls and hosts number two MICDS.

A year ago, Maplewood Richmond Heights football wasn’t on anyone's radar, let alone MICDS. Then the Blue Devils shocked the Rams 26-16 in the season opener. It’s no shock now that the Rams are planning a different outcome this year. When MICDS travels to MRH High School Friday night it will be the number two team in the area visiting number one, according to small-school rankings on STLToday.com. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. (Are you hungry for more Blue Devils news? Check out our Facebook page devoted to Blue Devils sports: www.facebook.com/MRHBlueDevils) When the teams scheduled the game last year, they didn't realize it'd be a battle of the top two teams, MRH coach Brandon Gregory said. “Definitely that adds a little bit of …
