MRH, Brentwood Grads on Dean's List at SE Missouri State

Three graduated in 2012 and on in 2011.

Maplewood Richmond Heights and Brentwood High School graduates currently at Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO) were recognized for academic achievement on Dec. 20. Two students from Brentwood and two from MRH were named to the Dean's List. Students named to the list earned at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale and completed at least 12 degree credit hours during the fall session. From Brentwood: Baker was also named to the Dean's List in Spring 2012. Snare received a scholarship to attend SEMO. From MRH: Bright was awarded the Missouri Leadership Award scholarship last spring. MRH Elementary Chess Club Wins on the Road

The Maplewood Richmond Heights Elementary Chess Club took first at a tournament at Lindbergh HS.

The Maplewood Richmond Heights Elementary Chess Team took first place in the 6th-grade and under division last Saturday at the Gateway Chess Tournament at Lindbergh High School.  In addition to winning 1st place, 4 of the boys took home medals, Chrys Kramer reported.

MRH Exhibits 5 Best Practices, Named an 'Apple Distinguished School'

Only 43 school nationwide were honored as such.

Maplewood Richmond Heights High School has again been named an “Apple Distinguished School.” The MRH School District reported on its website: According to Apple, “The administration and faculty at Maplewood Richmond Heights High School have shown that they exhibit the five best practices of an Apple Distinguished School: visionary leadership, innovative learning and teaching, ongoing professional learning, compelling evidence of success, and a flexible learning environment.” The MRH High School is a school designed to meet the needs of the 21st century learner. MRH Choirs Sing for Fall

The Maplewood Richmond Heights high school and middle school choirs presented their Fall Concert last night.

The results of obviously much hard work were presented on the Maplewood Richmond Heights Auditorium stage Wednesday night. The MRH Middle School and MRH High School choirs sang their Fall Concert for a mostly-full auditorium. Nicholas Urvan is the choral director. See more photos at Maplewood-Brentwood Patch Facebook (Like It!) The Middle School Choir sang Short People, Follow the Drinking Gourd, Count on Me, and others. The Treble Devils, high school girls, began with Call Your Girlfriend, with Natalie Mitten providing percussion with a plastic MRH cup and clapping. Lucy Miller soloed on Settle Down with poise, yet intensity. The program was entertaining, whether or not you might have a student performing.

Superintendent Thanks Community for Support at Rally, Have a Favorite Sign?

When Westboro Baptist Church came to Maplewood Richmond Heights they were met with opposition. Superintendent Karen Hall thanked the community for the support.

Maplewood Richmond Heights superintendent Karen Hall thanked the community for coming out in the hundreds to support the high school play, The Laramie Project, on the school district website on Monday. "On behalf of the Maplewood Richmond Heights School District, I want to thank you for the tremendous amount of support you showed our district this weekend. By sending emails of encouragement, making phone calls of support, coming to our rally, and attending the play, you showed that we will not allow hate in our community, nor allow our students to be bullied." Westboro Baptist Church Picket Met with Counter-Rally of Hundreds at MRH

Westboro Baptist came to picket a Maplewood Richmond Heights production of The Laramie Project, and a counter-protest drew supporters from all over.

Westboro Baptist Church came to Maplewood to picket the Maplewood Richmond Heights theater class production of The Laramie Project on Saturday, and a much larger group, supporting the students, gathered outside the school to counter-protest. The Laramie Project is about the murder of a gay student in 1998. Understanding and tolerance are themes of the play. Westboro Baptist is known for its vehement position against gays and lesbians. When students and faculty at MRH learned Westboro Baptist was coming to picket, they started to plan a counter-protest. Maplewood Police Chief: Westboro Baptist Church Has Right to Peaceful Protest

Westboro Baptist will protest the Maplewood Richmond Heights production of The Laramie Project on Saturday. Maplewood police will be there to keep the peace.

Maplewood Police learned about Westboro Baptist Church’s plans to picket at Maplewood Richmond Heights on Oct. 16, and will be at the planned protest on Saturday, Oct. 20. MRH High School is producing The Laramie Project, a play that promotes tolerance towards gays, and Westboro Baptist Church is know for its harsh protests against tolerance, and gays in general. Maplewood chief Steve Kruse received a letter from an attorney representing Westboro Baptist Church, notifying him they were going to protest The Laramie Project, and wanted police protection. The Maplewood Police Department did an excellent job today. I am proud of the MRH students and community for keeping it positive, peaceful, and not taking the bait. "Rev" Phelps is a con-man. What the WBC does is use every inflammatory method possible, with out quite crossing the limit of what is legal, in order to bait someone into reacting. MRH Gets Spirit, Homecoming Tonight

The Maplewood Richmond Heights student-made video highlights the fun of each day of the week.

It's Spirit Week at Maplewood Richmond Heights, leading up to the homecoming football game. Every day this week has had a different theme, finishing off with Blue and White day, on Friday. The Spirit Week video is an MRH student production. MRH plays Potosi (3-3) for the homecoming game. Following their 27-20 win last week over Fredericktown the Blue Devils moved up from No. 3 to No. 2 in the state, in Class 2, according to the St. Louis Post Dispatch.
