VIDEO: MRH Parents of All Levels Share Pot Luck, Ideas, Learn School History

Parents organized the get-together in the cafeteria Thursday night.

Maplewood Richmond Heights staff, administrators, board members and parents from all levels gathered in the high school/middle school cafeteria Thursday night. After a pot luck dinner, they shared favorite things about the schools, brainstormed for improvments, and learned the long history of the district from Beverly Tronicek. After all that, students and parents from different school organizations told about their clubs. The elementary school chess club, the middle school adventure club and parents from the MRH Junior Blue Devils were among the groups at the tables.

MRH Bond Refinancing Saves Taxpayers More Than $100,000

The District issues $3,050,000 in refunding bonds maturing in 2017 or after.

The Maplewood Richmond Heights School District originally issued $6,264,582 in General Obligation Bonds in 2005 to fund voter-approved District improvements. On Dec. 20, 2012 the Board of Education unanimously voted to issue “refunding bonds” for the purpose of refunding all or a portion of the outstanding Series 2005 Bonds maturing in 2017 or after in the aggregate principal amount of $3,050,000. On Jan. 17, the $3.05 million in refunding bonds were sold through Stifel Nicolaus & Company and with the counsel of Gilmore & Bell, P.C. Results of the sale will give the MRH School District $101,377 in cumulative savings (nearly $14,482 in average annual cash-flow savings), according to the district. Demand for the bonds, rated AA-, was good as…

Only Incumbents Filed for Brentwood, MRH School Board Seats

There will be no school board elections for either Maplewood Richmond Heights or Brentwood school districts this April.

Voters in the Maplewood Richmond Heights and Brentwood school districts won't be voting on school board members. In MRH only the two incumbents, Nelson Mitten and Brooke Rintoul filed to run. When the number of those running equals the number of open seats, there's no election. In Brentwood, only incumbents Regina Gahr and Chris Jones filed for the open positions. The school district isn't required to hold an election when that occurs.  Also in Patch: This article was updated at 1 p.m. on Jan. 16 to include correct information for the MRH district, that no election will be held.

MRH Response to Sandy Hook: ECC Doors Will be Locked Earlier

The director of communications said safety procedures are reviewed throughout the year.

Maplewood Richmond Heights schools are making slight changes, immediately, in response to the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut. MRH Director of Communications Brian Adkisson outlined how the district is responding to the tragedy. Reviewing (and modifying) our safety procedures within the District is an ongoing process that we do throughout the year. Incidents such as the tragic shooting in Connecticut on Friday makes those reviews take on even more importance.  Right now we are reviewing our existing policies and procedures with our staff and local police departments.  The one change we have made is locking the doors at the ECC a bit earlier than was previously done (all of our campuses have doors that are locked …

QuikTrip Passes, But Citizen Referendum Looms

The measure passed with one dissenting vote.

Maplewood City Council took the last vote on QuikTrip’s move to the intersection of Manchester and Big Bend at its meeting on Tuesday. Mayor James White said the process took longer than any previous measure, including Maplewood Commons. It passed, with Councilman Shawn Faulkingham voting no. He was opposed to totally closing off Martini Drive, which had already passed as an amendment. Resident Tonya Powell wants Maplewood residents to have the last say. She said in public comments that the QuikTrip situation is a “nightmare that has gotten worse,” and that if it passes she’ll organize a referendum and put it to the voters. “We have no other choice,” she said after the meeting. “We have five days from tonight to get our citizen group …

I agree very much with Jane and the Sara(h)s. Each of us can think of our "dream plan" for the northwest corner of Manchester & Big Bend - a park with gardens and fountains, perhaps? Most probably wouldn't choose a Quiktrip. But the reality of the situation is that it is not our decision to make - this is a privately owned lot we are talking about. This is up for debate due to the nature of the …   more ›

Not Final That MRH Boys Basketball Going Independent

MRH director of communications said it has to be right for everyone.

The Maplewood Richmond Heights boys basketball team has not been given the “green light to go independent,” as was stated in STLhighschoolsports.com on Friday. “It’s really not a done deal,” said MRH Director of Communications Brian Adkisson. Members of the South Central Athletic Association met in early March to discuss MRH leaving the conference. “Yes there have been discussions, there will be further discussions,” Adkisson said. “The bottom line is we want to make sure we as a district are making a right decision.” He said it’s how they approach all big decisions within the MRH district. “It's something that affects us all, and we want to make sure,” he said. “These other schools are our colleagues, our friends, our neighbors. We want …
