Hall's support of The Laramie Project was noted.
Maplewood Richmond Heights School District announced on its website that Superintendent Karen Hall has received the 2012-2013 Outstanding Administrator Award from the Missouri State Thespians Association. The Outstanding Administrator Award is given to a school administrator or team of administrators for their dedication and efforts to support educational theatre in their building, district and community. Superintendent Hall was nominated by MRH teachers Holly Potthoff and Joe Hosea, and students who performed in the high school’s play, The Laramie Project. When Westboro Baptist Church came to Maplewood Richmond Heights they were met with opposition. Superintendent Karen Hall thanked the community for the support.
Maplewood Richmond Heights superintendent Karen Hall thanked the community for coming out in the hundreds to support the high school play, The Laramie Project, on the school district website on Monday. "On behalf of the Maplewood Richmond Heights School District, I want to thank you for the tremendous amount of support you showed our district this weekend. By sending emails of encouragement, making phone calls of support, coming to our rally, and attending the play, you showed that we will not allow hate in our community, nor allow our students to be bullied." Westboro Baptist came to picket a Maplewood Richmond Heights production of The Laramie Project, and a counter-protest drew supporters from all over.
Westboro Baptist Church came to Maplewood to picket the Maplewood Richmond Heights theater class production of The Laramie Project on Saturday, and a much larger group, supporting the students, gathered outside the school to counter-protest. The Laramie Project is about the murder of a gay student in 1998. Understanding and tolerance are themes of the play. Westboro Baptist is known for its vehement position against gays and lesbians. When students and faculty at MRH learned Westboro Baptist was coming to picket, they started to plan a counter-protest. The believability of the play was aided heavily by the dynamic relationship between M’Lynn and Shelby Eatenton, showcased by Alex Ford and Maggie Edmondson respectively. After her marriage to Jackson, Shelby wants what most women want: a child. Her desire is hindered by her Type 1 diabetes and leads to complications. The drama surrounding her marriage and family life is the talk of the beauty shop and tests the bonds of friendship among the ladies. Maplewood Richmond Heights Theatre Department presents Steel Magnolias. It opened Thursday night.
Holly Potthoff, Maplewood Richmond Heights theatre teacher, and director of Steel Magnolias, talks about the MRH student play in this Blue Devil Production video. She says it's funny, but sad too, so bring a tissue. Cast memebers Jena Doering and Maggie Edmondson also talk about the play. Steel Magnolias, by Robert Harling, is a comedy-drama about the bond among a group of Southern women in a small town in Louisiana. The play opened Thursday night, and will run again Friday and Saturday in the MRH auditorium.
