106-Pound MRH Freshman Wrestler Goes to State, Dreams of Designing Cars

Romell Person has been wrestling since fifth grade and playing football since he was six.

Maplewood Richmond Heights freshman Romell Person stands 5 foot 1 ½ inches in wrestling shoes, and is soft-spoken, but his “yes sir” and “no sir” sets him apart. “My mom said always show your elders respect,” he said. “Show everyone respect, and you will get through life easier.” Person hasn’t made life easier for his opponents on the wrestling mat. He qualified for the state meet this year, at 106, no easy task for any wrestler. “As a freshman a lot of people didn’t think I was going to make it,” he said. “So I really wanted to work my way up to the top, to where I could go to state as a freshman, so I wouldn’t let anybody down.” As a fifth-grader, he got second in the AAU state meet, then was disappointed in sixth-grade. “I didn’t do …

Brentwood Qualifies 9 For State Wrestling Tournament

Two freshmen from Brentwood and one from Maplewood Richmond Heights qualified for the state meet.

Nine Brentwood wrestlers qualified for the state tournament at the district tournament on Saturday. That number nine is a record for the Eagles, coach Roy Hughes said. The top four finishers in each weight class at the district tournament qualify for the state meet. Brentwood was third overall in the tournament, with 136.5 points. Maplewood Richmond Heights was 10th, with 56. Whitfield won with 223.5 points. "We got what every coach wants, which is to peak at the right time," coach Roy Hughes said. He said he was surprised to have freshmen, Dexter Romos at 106, and Gary Silerio at 120, qualify. Silerio was down in points in his final match but ended up winning with a pin. Senior, David Rivera took second at Districts. He's returning to …

MRH's Maggitt Qualifies For National Wrestling Team

MRH's Montel Maggitt and Josh Pinson compete in the State Freestyle and Greco Roman Wrestling Tournament.

Maplewood Richmond Heights sophomore Montel Maggitt and junior Josh Pinson traveled to Sedalia, Mo., on May 7-8 to compete in the State Freestyle and Greco Roman Wrestling Tournament. Maggitt became the state champion in freestyle at 130 pounds in the Cadet Division. Pinson took fourth place in Greco Roman at 145 in the Junior Division. Maggitt said he barely won his championship match after falling behind 4-0. "I got a throw, which is three (points), then I had to pin him to get the win. So I got that done. Some of the people weren't happy though," Maggitt said. He said some of those in attendance weren't happy because many of the competitors were state wrestling champions and placers. Maggitt said the wrestler he beat went on the next …

Brentwood, MRH Wrestling Seasons Conclude in Columbia

Brentwood's seven wrestlers and MRH's three grapplers each were eliminated before the third day at the State Wrestling Championships at Mizzou Arena.

Though Brentwood wrestling brought seven wrestlers, the Eagles will be spectators on the final day of the Missouri State Wrestling Championships at Mizzou Arena in Columbia, Mo. But there some victories along the way for Brentwood and coach Roy Hughes. At 112 pounds, sophomore Rashaad Jordan advanced past day one with a 12-10 decision over Brian Noble (Stanberry). Jordan’s season ended on Friday with a loss to Adrian’s Brandt McMillan in a fall at 2:32. He finishes at 21-11 for this season. Senior Elie Moore, at 140 pounds, ended his season at 31-17. After surviving past Thursday with a 7-6 win over Lathrop’s Trent Scobee, Moore lost in his first match on Friday, 13-6, to Kevin Adam (Blair Oaks). Hughes had a third Eagles grappler advance …

Brentwood, MRH Send Wrestlers to State

Brentwood earns seven state qualifiers while MRH adds three place-winners at the Class 1, District 1 championship.

The Brentwood and Maplewood Richmond Heights wrestling programs will each be well-represented at this week’s state championships in Columbia, Mo. But it was the Whitfield wrestling program that put on a clinic on Saturday en route to defending its MSHSAA Class 1, District 1 championship. The Warriors qualified 13 individuals to the state tournament, including nine district champions. As for Brentwood’s sixth-place finish and seven individual qualifiers, head coach Roy Hughes was satisfied with his squad’s performance. Rashad Jordan (20-9) was the lone finalist, but the junior was pinned in 1:55 by Ryan Strope in the 112-pound title bout. Senior Elie Moore (30-15) used a nifty reversal to pin Whitfield junior Jake Becker with nine seconds …

Brentwood Wrestlers Take Control Over MRH

In a double-dual meet at MRH that included Barat Academy, the Brentwood wrestlers enjoyed a standout performance.

An early-season wrestling matchup between rivals Brentwood and Maplewood Richmond Heights showed both team's head coaches few surprises. In the end, Brentwood came out on top following some tough, tight bouts. MRH, Brentwood and Barat Academy clashed on the MRH mat on Tuesday in a double dual meet. MRH defeated Barat, 39-6, and Brentwood beat Barrat, 66-12. But in the results that mattered most to those in attendance, Brentwood prevailed over MRH, 51-19. It was the first meeting of the rivals this year. MRH coach Chris Meyer knew there would be several close matches between the two squads. Before the meet, he said weight classes 130, 135, 140, 145, 152, and 215-pounds were all between wrestlers of similar age and experience. "The close …

Maggitt, Verdia Lead Deep Group for MRH Wrestling

With a larger team than he's had for a while, MRH wrestling coach Chris Meyer is encouraged by a returning core and some new faces on the mat.

Maplewood Richmond Heights wrestling coach Chris Meyer says the team is larger than it has been for a long time. Factoring in the team's leadership from two returning wrestlers in particular, Meyer senses an abundance of motivation for MRH. "(Sophomore) Montell Maggitt and (junior) David Verdia did a lot of work," Meyer said. "They did summer freestyle and Greco-Roman and committed a lot of time to it, and lifted and trained pretty much all year for this season." The offseason work put in by Maggit and David Verdia has them as the clear team leaders. They're among six returners on the team, which also includes sophomore Jonas Tiggs and senior Eduardo Verdia, who both qualified for state last year, junior Josh Pinson and sophomore George …
