Maplewood Chamber of Commerce Board Votes No to Food Trucks

Downtown businesses would suffer, the board says. Its members will be out looking for signatures on a petition.

The Maplewood Chamber of Commerce has taken a preemptive position on food trucks in Maplewood. It doesn't want them. It believes food trucks would have a negative impact on restaurants, which would then affect other retailers. Members of the chamber plan on gathering signatures from businesses who support its position on March 23 from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m., and present the signatures at the April 2 Planning and Zoning Meeting.   See a Letter to the Editor Maplewood city councilmember Barry Greenberg sent to Patch on March 9 for some food truck issues. The Maplewood City Council debated food trucks at the Feb.8 meeting. A previous Patch poll was overwhelmingly in favor of food trucks. What do you say now?

You know, we let those dodgy ice cream vans drive around our neighborhood without thinking they will take business from Tiffany's (shakes), The Crow's Nest (ice cream), or Home Wine Kitchen (all around delicious desserts). Food trucks tend more towards the $7/meal range, and our restaurants tend more towards the $15/meal range. Also, the people who know and love our restaurants will not stop …   more ›

Chamber Director: Maplewood Business Community is Thriving

Leaders from the Maplewood Chamber of Commerce talk about the organization's accomplishments this year.

On Thursday evening in the Maplewood Chamber of Commerce office, president Jerry Gibbs and executive director Jeannine Beck were able to relax over a conference table while reflecting on how positive 2011 was for the Maplewood business community. "I can look back at this year and say, 'Gosh, it's been a really great year,'" said Beck, who is set to begin her fourth year as executive director in 2012. In 2011, two chamber-run events, the Taste of Maplewood and the Maplewood Christmas Tree Walk, attracted more attendees than ever before. The great weather certainly helped, Gibbs said, but that's not the only thing that supported the high attendance. "There's a lot of good buzz about Maplewood," said Gibbs, who owns J&E's Office City in …

Downtown Maplewood stayed busy during the Christmas Tree Walk on Friday night. The Maplewood Chamber of Commerce-sponsored celebration, in its 10th year, drew shoppers and families to Maplewood businesses. The crowd enjoyed carriage rides, visits with Santa Claus and open houses at different shops around town. At Tigerlily Gifts and Monograms, longtime patrons visited the store to chat while new customers came to shop. Tigerlily witnessed a constant stream of 20 to 30 shoppers throughout the night, co-owner Helen Stewart said. "It was the best Christmas Tree Walk we've had," she said. The evening started with a tree-lighting ceremony at Citizens National Bank Park at 6 p.m. and continued until 9 p.m. An extensive photo gallery is available…

The Crow's Nest is Latest Maplewood Restaurant

The Bleeding Deacon's Mike McLaughlin will open a new eatery in the former Red Lion space.

When the Red Lion shuttered its doors, patrons growled and local restaurateurs went on the hunt. The space was in a great location, in a great town and already set up for a restaurant. Mike McLaughlin, owner of the popular South City joint, The Bleeding Deacon, got there first. “I've always liked Maplewood,” McLaughlin said. “I have a good broker who brought it to me immediately. There was a line behind me. We were lucky.” If McLaughlin felt lucky to have landed the space, he feels even luckier today. The building requires no major renovations, and thanks to Maplewood's streamlined process for small businesses, he's planning on an early October opening. The way that the City of Maplewood has rolled out the red carpet has impressed him. “…

Having been there a few time, the Bleeding Deacon truly does have an interesting menu, with good portions as well. The extensive drink/beer list, good service, and customers that are varied yet not boorish, only add to the card. I certainly hope the elements that make the Bleeding Deacon a great place to visit will carry over to the new establishment.   more ›
