City council discussed the residential properties and what to do with them as soon as possible.
Maplewood City Council members spent the better part of last Tuesday night's meeting debating the fate of several 'problem properties' around the city. The first, a home located 2544 Circle Drive, has been an eyesore and a headache for area residents since 2008, Public Works Director Anthony Traxler said, with a "dilapidated" shed/garage, a need for window replacements and a new coat of paint, and a few other minor fixes. "They're worried about safety issues," Deputy Mayor and Ward 1 Councilowman Karen Wood said about neighbors near the home. "Nobody really knows what could be going on with the house, so I think we need to act on it in any way we can." The home owner has been given "every opportunity" at this point, Traxler said, to make …

Maplewood City Manager Martin Corcoran says QuikTrip's signed lease is contingent upon approval of the necessary permits from the city. The statement below is the complete statement from the city, released Friday afternoon.
Status of QuikTrip in Maplewood Release Date: Friday, May 25, 2012 There is quite a bit of buzz about the potential for a QuikTrip at the northwest corner of Manchester and Big Bend. City Manager, Marty Corcoran, has released a statement that is designed to answer many of the questions being asked and clarify the status of the proposed development as it presently stands: Status of the MRH School District Involvement: When QuikTrip first approached the city about locating at Manchester and Big Bend (approximately 90 days ago); we asked them to go talk to the School District. On two separate occasions, QuikTrip and the School District along with School Board members, met with QuikTrip. The School Board then informed QuikTrip and the city …

The first of four large retail spaces have been leased to national brands.
Maplewood’s Deer Creek Center may still be developed, in spite of the TIF commission voting against using public funding for the development in January. Summit Development Group, a private company that owns the property, requested $8.5 million. It can still happen if five of the seven city council members vote for it, but that won’t happen until Summit signs more tenants. City manager Marty Corcoran said after last week's council meeting there are a total of 10 to 12 spaces to lease, and four of those are “decent sized,” which he said are in the range of 20,000 square feet. One of those bigger spaces is signed for, and two will sign soon, Corcoran said. If Summit has three of the four large spaces leased, Corcoran said the city will meet …

Maplewood city council passed a resolution at Tuesday's meeting to spend more than $1 million on the improvements.
Five Maplewood streets will lose their holes and cracks, in due time. Yale Avenue, Marietta Avenue, Marshall Avenue, Walter Avenue and Williams Avenue will be repaved, thanks to a $1,180,644 bid accepted by the city for Raineri Construction to do the work. The resolution was passed at Tuesday's city council meeting in city hall. Raineri's was the low bid out of 10 received. Williams Avenue will be the first to be repaved. Either Marshall or Marietta avenues are after that. City Manager Marty Corcoran said Public Works Director Anthony Traxler is making that decision. Corcoran said it normally takes a contractor 30 to 45 days to get performance bonds, after approval, before work can start, and the city won't let a contractor start work …

QuikTrip would like to move to the corner opposite the new CVS, if they can work through the details. What about the McDonald's that was rumored a while ago?
One thing is a done deal for redevelopment at the intersection of Manchester and Big Bend. CVS Pharmacy hopes to have their doors open by October. Equipment was delivered to the site on Tuesday, which Maplewood city manager Marty Corcoran assumed is to demolish the existing building. He expects CVS to start construction by early June. “As far as the city is concerned, they have all the permits they need,” Corcoran said before the city council meeting Monday night. The CVS development had to be approved by the city twice, because after the first approval, CVS still had to iron out right-of-way issues with the St. Louis County highway department, then Maplewood had to amend the PUD (planned unit development) to OK that change. What about the…

Maplewood's Public Works Department will submit two applications for a Recycling and Waste Reduction Grant.
Businesses in downtown Maplewood could pay less for trash, recycling and composting services if the city is awarded a grant. Maplewood City Council approved a request at Tuesday night's meeting from the Public Works Department to apply for the grant for the services at the Marietta Avenue parking lot. The application includes two seperate requests. One request, if approved, would cover the cost of recycling and composting for businesses bordering the lot for one year. The second request would fund construction of an enclosure for grease dumpsters and recycling along the eastern portion of the lot. Director of Public Works Anthony Traxler estimated costs for the projects at $7,770 and $28,000 respectively in a city memo. Traxler said the …

The plat creates three new plots for parking and other MetroLink support.
An ordinance for a minor subdivision plat, to become part of the Sunquad Maplewood Subdivision, was approved by Maplewood City Council at the April 10 meeting. The plat was proposed to create three new lots that will provide additional and more convenient parking and support to the Sunnen Metrolink station, and other buildings around the area, according to a city memo. Lot 1 will support the existing MetroLink station, platform and related equipment, while Lot 2 will become an 80-space parking lot for the station, which was proposed last year. Lot 2's proximity to the station will make parking much closer for commuters and other MetroLink users. Lot 3 will serve as additional parking for other office and warehouse buildings in the …

16 new spaces will make the park even more accessible for residents and their pets.
A bid in the amount of $58,375 for the construction of 16 new parking spaces at Kellogg Park was approved at Tuesday night's Maplewood City Council meeting. The project is the most recent of several renovations to have taken place at the park in the past year and a half, including an initial 15 parking space installation and a new dog swimming pool. The spaces will be installed along Rannells Avenue and Circle Drive to make the park, and adjacent dog park, more accessible for residents and other patrons. Director of Public Works Anthony Traxler said the new spaces will also be useful once the city makes future improvements to the park's field for organized sports activities. Traxler recommended Dura Seal Paving Contractors, Inc. for the …

The commission voted 6-0 against “itinerant” restaurants.
By unanimous vote, the Maplewood Planning and Zoning Commission decided to do nothing and close its discussion with regard to food trucks, essentially continuing the city’s ban on mobile food operations–that is, unless Mayor James White and City Council says otherwise. Seventeen residents attended the meeting at Maplewood City Hall Monday night. Seven spoke–all of them against the mobile operations–including Bill Berthold of the chamber of commerce, who delivered a petition with signatures of 31 business owners against food trucks. The commission’s vote was 6-0 with member Linda Siemers absent. Jimmy John’s Restaurant vs. one food truck Driving the commission’s decision to disallow meals-on-wheels businesses from operating in Maplewood was…

The city council didn't want another sweltering block party night.
Maplewood residents won't have to endure summer heat to get together with their block neighbors this year. The Maplewood City Council voted to change the city's block party night from the Annual National Night Out, this year to be on August 7, to the St. Louis Region Night Out, which will be held on the first Tuesday in October. The regional date was set by the area police chiefs to avoid the heat, like last year's, with tempuratures in the 90s. "From my perspective," City Manager Marty Corcoran said in the meeting, "I can think of two things that maybe would be different (in October) than in August, besides the tempurature, school isn't in session, and you have a little more daylight in August. "The temperature has been brutal the last …

Hi Sabra! During the meeting Traxler said that the owner of the Circle Drive property not only pays his rent, taxes, etc., but actually also pays for all fines associated with not bringing the house up to code. Traxler said he has no idea why the owner doesn't just make the repairs (which would probably be a lot less expensive than paying court fees/fines) or sell the house. It's a strange …   more ›
