Renovation at Schnucks Would Include Space for New Businesses

The new space would host retail businesses and offices.

The Schnucks located at the corner of Manchester Road and Brentwood Boulevard could be getting a facelift soon.  The property's owner, Regency Center from Cincinnati, OH, submitted an application with the city of Brentwood seeking several renovations. The application has been reviewed by the Brentwood Planning and Zoning Commission, and a subcommittee is expected to continue discussions with the developer during a meeting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, stated Bola Akande, city administrator for Brentwood, in an email to Patch. Mayor Pat Kelly first announced the proposed renovation during his State of the City Address last week. In the plan, Schnucks would gain improvements in the interior, building facade, landscaping and 14 new light fixtures. …

Brentwood Fire Department To Get New Turnout Gear After 20 Years

The Board of Alderman approved the purchase at a recent meeting.

The Brentwood Board of Aldermen approved the purchase of thirteen sets of structural turnout gear — the protective clothing worn by firefighters — at its May 21 meeting at city hall. The new gear, which costs $31,980, will replace items that are 20 years old. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends replacement of turnout gear for front-line firefighters every five years. However no one — including Mayor Pat Kelly or new Brentwood Fire Chief Ted Jury — knows the reason for the lengthy delay in purchasing the protective clothing for the department. Brentwood Fire Department has 21 firefighters; 13 are also licensed paramedics. “For budgetary purposes, we replaced the worst sets of the old gear,” Jury said. “But we have …

I agree with Cindy Manestar this equipment needs to be replaced. I attended the Ways and Means meeting when the 2012 budget was presented and pushed for the replacement of the equipment and questioned why the equipment hadn't been replaced in the past. At the recent May 21, 2012 Board of Alderman meeting I brought up replacing the remaining sets now. I will join with Cindy to make sure the …   more ›

Brentwood Skating Rink Put On Ice–Again

Board of Aldermen agrees to jump-start next meeting with discussion about what to do with the city’s aging rec complex, starting with its ice rink. Meeting date and time changed to June 11 at 6 p.m. at Brentwood City Hall.

Brentwood Mayor Pat Kelly just wanted an idea of where the board of aldermen stood with regard to the Brentwood ice rink at Monday night’s meeting. And he wanted to limit their talk on the topic to 20 minutes at the public meeting. What occurred, however, was a spirited, almost contentious discussion that took almost twice that amount of time — with no decision rendered, and not even a straw vote taken. “We done surveys, plural,” Kelly said. “We’ve done committees. I think what it comes down to is that the board (of aldermen) really needs to make some decisions in order to give staff direction as to where we want to go.” Specifically, the board needs to decide whether or not to keep the city’s venerated, but maintenance-heavy ice rink that…

At Aldermanic Meeting, Saunders Squares Off With Mayor Kelly

Brentwood residents spend half of Monday's meeting asking questions and criticizing the city's handling of recent events.

Monday night’s Brentwood Board of Aldermen meeting quickly became heated as residents once again took Mayor Pat Kelly and the board to task about their handling of recent events and the way the city conducts general meetings. The open session lasted roughly an hour, but half of that time was spent on the public comment period. Of the 20 residents who attended the meeting, five spoke. They continued to ask why former Brentwood city administrator Chris Seemayer was allowed to resign instead of being fired. Others asked about purported financial mismanagement in the city. For the most part, Kelly and the aldermen waited patiently to respond while being peppered with questions and none-too-subtle criticisms. Legalities prevented Kelly from …

Update: Chris Seemayer is Still Collecting Benefits from Brentwood

Former Brentwood city administrator Chris Seemayer forfeited $30,000 of his sick days and vacation pay to reimburse Brentwood's legal fees.

Update Wed, 9 p.m.: Information about Seemayer's benefits added. Former Brentwood city administrator Chris Seemayer is required to pay back all of the nearly $30,000 he stole from the city coffers. That's part of U.S. District Judge Catherine Perry's sentencing that Seemayer make full restitution with the City of Brentwood. Another part of that restitution is reimbursing the city for its legal fees. Seemayer has already done that - by forfeiting roughly $30,000 in accrued sick days and vacation pay, Mayor Pat Kelly said. Seven months after Seemayer's most recent theft of Brentwood money, he's still collecting benefits from the city he once ran for more than two decades. Upon his resignation from the city, Seemayer had a sick leave balance …

Seemayer Given Probation, No Prison Time

The former Brentwood city administrator faced sentencing in a federal courthouse on Wednesday afternoon.

When Chris Seemayer arrived to a 12th-floor federal courtroom on Wednesday afternoon, he did so as a free man led by his two attorneys and surrounded by family and loved ones. After pleading guilty in June to stealing nearly $30,000 from the city he ran for more than two decades, the former Brentwood city administrator learned the penalty of his crime on Wednesday: five years probation with six months of home confinement. Seemayer, 52 of Fenton, is also required to pay back the money he stole and was fined an additional $2,000. Treatment for a gambling addiction is also part of his probation. Under federal sentencing guidelines, Seemayer, 52, could have faced six months to a year in prison, but U.S. District Judge Catherine Perry granted …

I would like to know how much the City paid in attorney's fees to fight its legal obligation under the sunshine law to provide its citizens with the details of the firefighters' settlement. It took the Court about two seconds to determine that the City's position had no merit. Using the Seemayer rule, maybe our Mayor and Board will repay the City for the money we spent on attorneys because of …   more ›

After Citizen-led Effort, Brentwood City Hall Calls for State Audit

The city sent a press release on Monday that called for a state audit of its finances to "restore confidence in our city government."

This article was updated at 10:15 p.m. to include information from an interview with Gary McElyea, spokesman for the Missouri State Auditor's Office.  On Monday, Mayor Pat Kelly called for a state audit of the city's finances, two weeks after two Brentwood residents began collecting signatures on a petition for the same purpose.  Kelly made the statement in a press release sent to local news outlets. The release notes that the mayor sent a letter to Missouri State Auditor Tom Schweich on Friday that requests the audit to "restore confidence in our city government." (See PDF attached to article.) In an interview, Kelly said a state audit would help the city "regain the confidence of the citizenry." The audit would help the city establish …

State Audit Drive Supported by 1,000 Brentwood Residents

Two weeks ago, residents Maureen Saunders and Julie Pozzo started collecting signatures for a petition to audit Brentwood's finances. They've tallied nearly 1,000 signatures since then.

A petition that seeks a state audit of Brentwood's finances gained more than enough signatures for state approval on Monday, prompting resident Maureen Saunders to send the paperwork to the Missouri State Auditor's office.  Saunders and Julie Pozzo, another Brentwood resident, started collecting signatures on Monday, July 25. They tallied 946 signatures in two weeks, and are still collecting signatures from residents who want to show their support. They needed 750 signatures to spark an audit from the state auditor.  (See related on Patch: Residents Seek State Audit of Brentwood's Finances) Saunders said she expects to hear back from the auditor's office within a month — the office must verify that each signature belongs to a registered …

PR for Brentwood Government Comes at a Cost

The city contracted someone for public relations consultation following the recent financial scandals.

The costs for Brentwood's two recent financial scandals have been mounting. After the $30,000 in embezzled funds from Chris Seemayer, $85,000 spent on a labor attorney and the hundreds of thousands lost in undeserved overtime pay, the city added one more cost on Monday: $3,000 for "PR for legal matter," as noted in a city document. The Brentwood Board of Aldermen approved a list of expenditures that included a $3,000 payment to Margaret Welch, a public relations consultant who operates her own business. The city hired her to help with public relations following the recent financial scandals. Welch helped with press releases and developed talking points for Mayor Pat Kelly, Kelly said. "We don't have a PR person and we're short-handed …

Streets, Sidewalks Improvements Discussed at Aldermanic Meeting

Some work was accomplished by the Brentwood Board of Aldermen following the public comment period, where citizens shared their frustrations with the city's recent financial scandals.

Although most of Monday’s Brentwood Board of Alderman meeting dealt with financial scandals rocking the city and citizens’ frustration about them, some work was accomplished during the hour-long session. The board approved three ordinances; two of which dealt with street and sidewalk improvements to Litzsinger Road and Rose Avenue, respectively. The other ordinance pertained to a residential energy efficiency loan program. Specifically, the board of aldermen approved ordinances for: Improvements to Litzsinger Road The board approved a Surface Transportation Program (STP) agreement with the Missouri Department of Transportation for improvements to Litzsinger Road, from McKnight Road to Brentwood Boulevard. Improvements include resurfacing, …
