Some details about Dr. Robert Dillon's abrupt resignation from the Maplewood Richmond Heights School District (MRH) are beginning to surface. Dillon, who worked as principal of the middle school, unexpectedly resigned on Wednesday morning. The resignation followed a closed meeting of the MRH Board of Education on Tuesday night. A preliminary record from the meeting shows that school board members discussed Dillon's contract during that meeting. The document, which became available to Patch on Thursday afternoon, shows that all six school board members met with Superintendent Karen Hall, Assistant Superintendent Roxanna Mechem and Cindy Ormsby, who works as the district's attorney. The Maplewood Richmond Heights school board met on Thursday. The Maplewood city council is scheduled to vote on the move at its meeting on Tuesday.
The Maplewood Richmond Heights School board remains unified and undeterred in its opposition to the QuikTrip on South Big Bend moving to the northwest corner of Manchester and Big Bend. That was made clear in its first public meeting where the issue was discussed, on Thursday at MRH. Board member Nelson Mitten read a resolution laying out the board’s case, including its opposition to the design, the number of students who cross the intersection as they walk to school and how increased traffic would make that more dangerous, and that QuikTrip has refused accommodations to increase safety. Board member Nelson Mitten said they'd like help more students, including girls.
Joe’s Place, a block away from Maplewood Richmond Heights High School, has been home to homeless boys, so they could finish high school. It was founded in 2006, and since then 13 of 14 boys actively involved in the outreach program have gone on to graduate. Joe’s Place board member, Nelson Mitten, said it’s unique in the United States, as far as he knows. The Joe's Place outreach program for homeless boys earned the Maplewood Richmond Heights School District the $4,000 grand prize in the under-5,000 enrollment category of the American School Board Journal's Magna Awards program. Two MRH Board of Education members were appointed to a commission that will advise Maplewood City Council on whether the city should use tax-increment financing to redevelop the vacant Deer Creek Center building.
Maria Langston and Nelson Mitten will represent the Maplewood Richmond Heights School District on a commission aiming to advise Maplewood City Council during the Deer Creek Center redevelopment process. Langston and Mitten, two members of the MRH Board of Education, were appointed to the commission during Wednesday's school board meeting. Twelve people will be appointed to a commission that functions as an advisory board to the Maplewood City Council. The commission will specifically offer recommendations on whether the city should use tax-increment financing (TIF) to fund the redevelopment. Joe's Place gained more funding on Wednesday night, courtesy of the charitable spirit of Maplewood Richmond Heights alumni who graduated during the 1960s. Bonnie Paulsmeyer, representing the alumni who held a reunion in September, presented more than $3,000 to the school district during an MRH Board of Education meeting on Wednesday night. Paulsmeyer is a former graduate, teacher and principal in the district. Alumni who graduated in the 1960s held a weekend-long reunion in September.
