Local Music Spotlight: My Molly Raises Money for Full-Length Album

The indie folk duo from Maplewood has already raised more than $1,000.

Ask the management of Stone Spiral Coffee and Curios to name an up-and-coming local band, and they will offer two words: My Molly. A pair of 21-year-olds comprises the band from Maplewood. Rebecca Hanneken plays guitar and tambourine (with her feet) while Mallory Barnes holds down the floor tom, glockenspiel and other hand percussion. After becoming known for their trademark two-part harmony at Stone Spiral's weekly open mic nights, the two have wowed their way into an album—their first—with an indie label founded in St. Louis and currently operating out of Denver.  “We’re part of Morning Bird Records, and they’ve been pushing us to do an album,” Hanneken said. Open Mic Features Variety of Talents

A group of poets and musicians performs each Wednesday night at the coffee shop.

On one night each week, Stone Spiral Coffee and Curios takes a break from its solid block of nightly band bookings to allow for poetry, amateur musicians and even stand-up comedians. Don't be fooled by the flier you see taped up on the wall; the Wednesday open mic sessions never begin at 7 p.m. or end at 9 p.m. The event, founded and organized by south St. Louis city resident John Bernardy, usually begins closer to 8 p.m. It's structured to allow each performer a few minutes of microphone time before passing it off to the next person. Then, after everyone on the sign-up sheet has performed, the emcee cycles back through the list again for round two.
