The vote was one step toward deciding the fate of the aging Recreation Center, built in 1975.
The Brentwood Board of Aldermen, on Monday, got a round of applause for something that was four years in the making. As a step toward deciding the fate of the Brentwood Recreation center, the aldermen voted to keep the ice rink as part of the Rec Center. It was unanimous except for Ward 3 Alderman Andy Leahy, who voted no. Ward 4 Alderman Tom Kramer was absent. Ward 1 Alderwoman Maureen Saunders started the discussion by stating that the Warren Poll indicated the residents are satisfied with the co-op agreement with Maplewood and Richmond Heights. She said Brentwood’s part in that is the ice rink. Ward 3 Alderman Keith Robertson said the city will have to spend a substantial amount of money just to get the building up to code, and spending…

A resident said delaying the decision is hurting the ice rink.
Brentwood could be closer to a decision about what to do with the aging Brentwood Recreation Center/Ice Rink, as of Wednesday. To help the city decide, it hired Kenneth Warren, Ph.D, of the Warren Poll, who polled 646 Brentwood residents from April 1-15 on their opinions of the Brentwood Recreation Center, City Hall and Library. Warren was chosen by the Public Works committee in December 2012. On Wednesday he presented the results of his polling to the Public Works Committee. Among his findings (percentages rounded): Warren said the bottom line is that residents want renovations but only a trickle of them are willing to pay more than a $100 more in property taxes per year to fund it. He blamed that on the poll being administered at the …

A $9 million Rec Center bond issue initiative lost steam in 2011. Now the Board of Aldermen are asking residents what they think.
The City of Brentwood recently announced that randomly selected Brentwood households will be asked to participate in a city survey in April. City administrator Bola Akande told Patch that the Brentwood Community Center is the focus, and there will also be questions on city facilities and services. The Public Works Committee approved a $9 million bond issue to pay for a renovated Brentwood Recreation Complex in 2011, but the initiative stalled out in city hall. Last August the Public Works Committee agreed to poll residents on the Recreation Center, and interviewed firms for the job later in the year. Akande said the survey's cost to the city is $11,800. She said there are around 50 questions and the average time to answer the survey is 10-…

Alderman Tom Kramer said the questions would be more detailed this time.
In the process to determine the future of the 37-year-old Brentwood Recreation Complex, the next step will be a survey to go out to residents. The Brentwood Public Works Committee is currently interviewing companies in a search to find one to help them design and conduct that survey. The committee interviewed two companies on Nov. 7, and a third will be scheduled in Dec. City administrator Bola Akande said the service is expected to cost between $10,500 - $11,800. Alderman Tom Kramer isn’t on the Public Works Committee, but was at the meeting last week. He said the committee wants to know if residents would like to see a rebuilt recreation center, do they want to keep the ice skating rink, are they willing to support it with a bond issue, …

The meeting tonight will be at the Brentwood Recreation Center at 7 p.m.
A discussion of the future of the Brentwood Recreation Center is the first item on the agenda. At previous meetings, moving the functions of city hall to the rec center were considered. A public hearing on the 2012 property tax rate. A bill to set the tax rate for the 2012 year. A bill to approve the tax rate for 2012 for the public library. A rate of .20 per $100 of assessed valuation was approved by the library board. A bill to set the annual assessment for the sewer lateral repair program at $50. A bill to enter into an easement agreement betwen the city of Brentwood and Postal Properties. The first hour of Monday's board of aldermen meeting was devoted to the recreation complex. In the end they voted unanimously to let the Public Works Committee work on it one more time, before the full board takes it up again at the July meeting.
Two issues brought 50 to 60 Brentwood residents to a multi-purpose room at the Brentwood Recreation Complex Monday night for the June Board of Alderman meeting. The meeting was a week early because mayor Pat Kelly and city administrator Bola Akande couldn’t make the scheduled June 18 meeting, and it was at the Recreation Center because the court had the room in City Hall Monday night. It was appropriate to meet in a room with windows overlooking the ice rink. It was the topic of discussion the first hour of the meeting. Mayor Pat Kelly had scheduled the discussion because he said he wants the alderman to get to a motion on the future of the recreation center. He said he’s concerned that they can’t seem to all get on the same page. “That’s…

Two hot-button topics will be discussed at the Brentwood Board of Aldermen meeting at the Recreation Complex at 6 p.m. June 11.
Brentwood Recreation Complex Brentwood mayor Pat Kelly asked the aldermen to discuss the future of Brentwood's Recreation Complex for 20 minutes at the May 21 meeting, which resulted in a much longer discussion with no consensus reached. The city considered bringing a $9 million bond issue to the voters last year to renovate the complex but it never got out of the ways and means committee. Alderman Keith Robertson had advocated for the bond issue last year. He was in favor of a plan to bring the building up to code, improve the ice rink, and add a fitness center and multi-use gym. Alderman Andrew Leahy was concerned that voters wouldn’t approve a bond issue in the midst of the down economy. He had voted against the proposal in April. …

Yes! This is excellent news! I've been campaining for years and been to many meetings working to convince people the rink should stay. I'm thrilled with the support the board has finally given officially to the rink. It would be great to improve the locker rooms and add a small food/snack bar - it would make the arena more appealing for our teens to potentially hang out and nicer for parents who …   more ›
