Owens' Scoring, Brentwood's Pressure Leads to Eagles Win

The Eagles cause 25 turnovers and cruise to 64-53 win over Valley Park on Tuesday.

VALLEY PARK – The Brentwood boys basketball team knows that on most nights, and against most opponents, it’s going to face a severe size disadvantage. The Eagles don’t have anyone taller than 6-foot-3, and on Tuesday night, went into a game against a taller Valley Park team. But what Brentwood does have is a bunch of fast, pesky guards that can really pressure the ball and make it difficult for an opponent to run any kind of structured offense. That’s exactly what the Eagles did to the host Hawks, forcing a whopping 25 Valley Park turnovers in a convincing 64-53 win in the first round of the Valley Park Invitational Tournament. “It was a little bit sloppy,” Brentwood coach Brad Kern said. “They had quite a bit of size on us, and we had …

Brentwood Basketball Looking To Get Back On Winning Track

Eagles are primed to improve on last year’s 9-14 season. The season opener is set for Tuesday at home against Construction Careers Academy.

Coming off a 9-14 season last year, and with the two best players from that team now playing in college, some might think the Brentwood High School boys basketball team is in for a rebuilding year this season. Don’t count head coach Brad Kern among those that think that though. Kern said he is very excited about the Eagles prospects for the coming season. “We go about nine deep,” Kern said. “I think we’re deeper than we were last year. We can play more up-tempo than we did in the past, and I think we’ll be more exciting.” Leading the Eagles on the court this year will be its three senior captains Danny Lynch, Diontez Edwards and Jesse Sneed. All three are expected to start, while Kern also expects to get big contributions from juniors Josh…

Kicker Caragher is Clutch for Brentwood Eagles

The Eagles advance to the next round of the postseason after grabbing a late win against Carnahan on Wednesday night.

The game clock read 2:48 in the fourth quarter when Brentwood kicker Jake Caragher stood at the 17-yard line, waiting for the ball to be snapped. Caragher, a senior, kept telling himself that this kick was no different than an extra point. Never mind that Brentwood and Carnahan were tied 14-14 with the season on the line. Finally, the snap came, and the hold was perfect. Caragher powered the ball through the uprights, prompting the home Brentwood crowd to erupt in cheers. The 27-yard field goal would prove to be the deciding score in a game that featured an explosive first half but quiet second one. "I don't even know what to say right now," said a smiling Caragher after the game. "This is amazing. There is no other feeling." Have you '…

Brentwood's Win Vaults Eagles Into Postseason

Junior Rekardo Owens’ three second-half touchdown runs spark Eagles to 41-19 win over Panthers.

TOWN AND COUNTRY — Walking around the field at Principia High School’s John Jamerson Stadium before Saturday’s Class 2 District 3 championship football game, Brentwood head coach Keith Herring was a little concerned that his players weren’t really as ready to play as they let on. Herring told his assistant coaches that he hoped his Eagles would be loose for the biggest game of the year, but with just minutes to go before the opening kickoff, the head coach thought the team was too loose. “It was bothering me a lot,” Herring said. “But I thought, once we get going, the kids will ratchet up the intensity and we’ll be fine.” It didn’t work out that way at all, as Brentwood barely survived a shaky first half, and trailed the host Prin Panthers…

Brentwood Defense Stuffs Grandview

Friday night's win guarantees a playoff spot for the Brentwood Eagles.

A strong defensive performance from Brentwood shut out district foe Grandview on Friday night, as the home Eagles won 35-0. The win guarantees Brentwood (5-3) a spot in the state playoffs. Grandview's loss (1-7) knocked them out. (For a full photo gallery, visit our Brentwood Eagles Facebook page at www.facebook.com/BrentwoodEagles) After an early rush for a score from Brentwood senior Tyler Jones, Grandview responded by promptly marching down the field. Brentwood stopped Grandview on a 4th-and-5 play, but Brentwood was flagged for roughing the passer. Brentwood senior Danny Lynch spoiled the extended drive when he snagged an interception inside Brentwood's 20-yard line and returned it for a score, giving Brentwood a 14-0 lead in the first…

Brentwood Second-Half Rally Falls Short Against North Callaway

Eagles trailed 26-0 but fought back late in Brentwood's final tune-up before districts.

KINGDOM CITY – A furious second-half comeback attempt fell just short for the Brentwood football team Friday night, as the Eagles scored three late touchdowns, but couldn’t get the necessary fourth, in a 26-21 road loss against North Callaway. The host Thunderbirds came out flying pretty high in the first half against Brentwood, soaring to a 20-0 halftime lead, while the Eagles couldn’t manage to get much done at all. “We just didn’t play very good in the first half,” Eagles head coach Keith Herring said. “We got off to real slow start, and we were playing a couple of young guys at fullback and at middle linebacker, and we just didn’t play very good at the start.” Nor did Brentwood play particularly well at the start of the second half, as…

Eagles Look to Recover From Friday's Loss

Brentwood aims to rebound when it plays North Callaway next week.

Lutheran South was once a team that Brentwood could easily beat, but on Friday night, in front of Brentwood's homecoming crowd, this Lancers team had a different plan. The Eagle’s three-game winning streak came to an abrupt end after they lost to the Lancers 8-46. “They’re a good team, but we didn’t play up to our potential and just had a terrible night on defense,” Brentwood coach Keith Herring said. “Things didn’t happen for us. What more do I say?” (More photos are available on our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/BrentwoodEagles) One stat is enough: Brentwood was stopped on nine of 10 possessions, while Lutheran South scored touchdowns on seven of 10 possessions. Herring said he thought they could give them a game, and the Eagles …

Brentwood's Winning Streak Hits a Wall

The Eagles score only one touchdown in their homecoming game against Lutheran South.

Brentwood’s three-game winning streak hit a brick wall at homecoming on Friday night. The Eagles (3-3) were humbled by Lutheran South (2-4) by a score of 8-46. (A huge photo gallery from the game is available on our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/BrentwoodEagles) Seniors Tyler Jones and Danny Lynch led on rushing with 46 and 37 yards respectively. Junior Rekardo Owens followed with 27. On the Lancers side, senior Tuskani Figaro had 100 yards rushing before halftime, when the Lancers led the Eagles 33-0. He finished with 139 yards rushing and 60 yards receiving. He ran in three of the Lutheran South touchdowns. The Eagles’ only score came in the third quarter on a 12-yard slanting pass from junior quarterback Jordan Groth to junior …

Brentwood's Owens is a Strong Rusher

Junior Rekardo Owens, injured most of last year, is having a breakout season.

A lot of Brentwood folks have Eagles running back Rekardo Owens’ back. Owens is a junior on the Brentwood High School football team, and played for the Junior Eagles before high school. He had a good freshman year on junior varsity, was injured most of his sophomore year, and is now sharing running duties with seniors Danny Lynch and Tyler Jones. This season has been a breakout year for Owens. In the past two games, Owens has tallied 198 yards and four offensive touchdowns (and one defensive score too). Head coach Keith Herring said Owens has a natural sense as a running back. “I’ve always felt that those guys, if you coach them too much, then you’ve probably got the wrong guy back there,” he said. “He can kind of feel where the hole is at…

Brentwood Football Shuts Out MMA

The visiting Colonels only mustered one first down on the night.

A Brentwood Eagles offense that finally began clicking last week continued to produce against the Missouri Military Academy on Friday night. The Eagles (2-2) roughed up the Colonels (0-4) 69-0 at Brentwood High School, allowing only one first down throughout the game while giving several Brentwood rushers the opportunity to score.  (A complete photo album is available on our Brentwood Eagles Facebook page: www.facebook.com/BrentwoodEagles) The Eagles primary trio of running backs combined to score seven touchdowns. Senior Danny Lynch scored three, senior Tyler Jones scored one and junior Rekardo Owens scored three. Jones and Owens both scored one defensive touchdown too. The list of other scorers includes a touchdown from freshman running …
