Shop Local: Gifts Under $20 in Maplewood Brentwood

These local businesses offer a great selection of gifts under $20 for those on your holiday shopping list.

If there’s one thing I love, it’s a good deal. Clearance racks make me jump for joy, coupons are my best friends, and my family loves to poke fun at my extreme thriftiness. I may or may not break down gift sets into multiple presents for friends, I repurpose paper bags from Trader Joes into wrapping paper, and I’m the queen of regifting. Well, now my dirty little secrets are out, but judging by the crowds I witnessed on Black Friday, I’m not the only person who lives for a great deal. And in this economy, everyone can certainly stand to save a buck or two on holiday gifts. Luckily, Maplewood and Brentwood are full of great local shops that offer a variety of budget-friendly holiday gifts. Many people assume that locally-owned businesses …

Tips on Pairing Food and Wine, From Saint Louis Cellars

Ever tried a light rosé wine with BBQ?

Pairing wine with food can be complicated. With so many wines to choose from, and endless food combinations to work with, how can the average person create a winning pair? I was taught to match what my wine instructor called "power with power," which simply means pairing lighter dishes with lighter wine and vice versa. For more in depth information and expert advice, I went to manager and marketing director Dianne Blaskiewicz at Saint Louis Cellars. Blaskiewicz concurred the "power with power" concept, though admitted it can be difficult. "We try to keep it as simple as possible," Blaskiewicz said. "People come in and tell us what they want to make, and we match the wine according to that." Some dishes don't quite fit the mold, however, …

Foodie Finds

Stop Whining and Start Wine-ing

Are you as clueless about wine as I am? Here are some good places in Maplewood and Brentwood to expand your wine knowledge.

Not to toot my own horn or anything, but when it comes to food, I know what I’m talking about. I can wax poetic about ganache, cavolo nero, and remoulade all day long. I know the difference between ceviche and sashimi. And who doesn’t love a tasty amuse bouche? Okay, so maybe I’ve just watched one too many episodes of Top Chef; however, my point still stands: I know food. Wine, on the other hand? I’m embarrassed to say that I know absolutely nothing about this fancy beverage. It’s a shame, really. The alcoholic delight often accompanies conversation about food; it’s the yin to food’s yang, so to speak. But when the subject of wine is brought up, my eyes glaze over in that “I have no idea what you’re talking about so I’m just going to smile…
