A line in St. Louis Magazine's November issue drew a response from Maplewood's community development director, who called the sentence a "pointless and off-putting message."
In a St. Louis Magazine article highlighting downtown Maplewood's retail options, one sentence didn't sit very well with Rachelle L'Ecuyer, the city's community development director. The article, which ran in the magazine's November issue, included the line, "With Mezzanine and Monarch Restaurant closing in the past year, Maplewood’s boom seems to have slowed." L'Ecuyer responded by submitting a letter for the magazine's February issue. In it, she wrote about the city's evolution into a "walkable historic downtown" over the past decade. She noted that the city contains only two vacant storefronts in downtown Maplewood, compared to more than 10 about seven years ago. Steve Gontram will open the restaurant on Maryland Avenue, St. Louis Magazine's Relish blog reported.
The former owner of Richmond Heights' acclaimed Harvest restaurant will open Five Star Burgers St. Louis on Maryland Avenue in Clayton, St. Louis Magazine's Relish blog reported Thursday. Quoting from the Relish post: "Steve’s father, Bob Gontram, is currently developing Five Star Burgers in New Mexico, and the St. Louis location 'will be modeled after his,' said the younger Gontram, adding that St. Louis will see some 'personal touches to an already great concept.'" The magazine's annual poll seeks reader votes, and Maplewood and Brentwood have several destinations listed.
Second-round voting has opened on St. Louis Magazine's website to determine which businesses should be named to the magazine's annual "A List." The "A-List" is a compilation of St. Louis' best, as judged by St. Louis Magazine staff and readers. The second round, which accepts user voting until March 16, features "Shopping, Body, Kids and Service" destinations in the St. Louis area. The first round ran from Jan. 20 to Feb. 17, and focused on "Food and Night Life" destinations.
