One bolt from Saturday's storm sent the chimney to the parking lot.
As folks were taking shelter from the storm on Saturday afternoon in Maplewood establishments like Saratoga Lanes, The Wood and Maya Cafe, a crack of lightning hit the chimney on the corner of Saratoga Lanes, and sent it to the parking lot below. Part of the chimney hit a balcony and broke out some of the railing. The rest spread across an open parking spot between two cars, as if that's what it had in mind. Julie Moeckel, from Brentwood, was at Saratoga Lanes when it happened. "Rather scary moment, the sound of the bricks hitting the roof and then balcony before landing in the parking lot was incredibly loud," Moeckel's father, Andy, told Patch in an email. The storm blew the chimney off Saratoga Lanes. Large branches and wires were downed across the entire area.
Maplewood and Brentwood survived the violent thunderstorm that swept St. Louis with little more than downed branches and electrical wires. Dispatchers for both cities reported no injuries. Jason Neubauer, a dispatcher with the St. Louis County East Central Police Dispatch, said there were some brush fires that resulted, but they were extinguished. East Central Dispatch covers Maplewood, Richmond Heights, Webster Groves, Clayton and Olivette. Around Maplewood, tree limbs were blocking Lohmeyer Avenue, Commomwealth Avenue, the 7200 block of Gayola Place, and Princeton Place at Bruno Avenue. The storm appears to be over, but many residents remain without power in Brentwood and Maplewood.
Update (Monday, 7:45 p.m.) — Many power outages have been resolved in the Brentwood and Maplewood ZIP codes, but 199 residents remain without power, according to Ameren's outage map. Update (Monday, 3:40 p.m.) — Many residents in Brentwood and Maplewood remain without power on Monday after a storm knocked down trees and power lines. Ameren reports that 725 homes are without power in the Brentwood ZIP code (63144) and 68 are without power in the Maplewood ZIP code (63143) as of 3:35 p.m. That's down from 1,500 total homes around 2 p.m. No injuries have been reported in Brentwood or Maplewood, police officials said.
