Deep-frying a turkey can be delicious but dangerous without the right safety tools.
Each year, families gather around a roasted or baked turkey for the holidays. Some families decide to go outside of the box and deep-fry turkeys for the holidays, which is when things get more serious I grew up with my dad frying turkeys for the holidays. As newlyweds, my wife and I will fry a turkey for our first Thanksgiving together and may continue the tradition. Several dangers can mount from deep-frying a turkey, though. More than 4,000 fires occur on Thanksgiving across the country, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. Therefore, in order to ensure a safe holiday season, we’re showing how to safely deep-fry a turkey. In order to reinforce the safety issues, we teamed up with Florissant Valley Fire Protection District to give …

Ways to make your Thanksgiving meal a little bit healthier.
While Thanksgiving might be a week away you are hopefully thinking about your menu and preparing your grocery list. As you put together the meal, take some time to think about how healthier food choices fit within your plan. The traditional Thanksgiving meal revolves around the lower fat turkey but some of the accompaniments can boost calories, salt and sugar. Making recipe medications is one way to manage the calories and shifting some preparation techniques can lower salt and sugar. As you put together your menu plan consider the following tips. In addition to these recipe changes, consider smaller portion sizes for pies and desserts so that people can enjoy them without having to eat large portions – they can always go back for seconds…

The Thanksgiving holiday falls as early as possible because November begins with a Thursday. You'll have more time to Christmas shop if "Black Friday" is the official start.
Some residents and businesses will start stringing up the Christmas lights as soon as the Halloween decorations come down, but hardcore shoppers know when their dream season begins. Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, has become the accepted if unofficial start time of the Christmas rush. It's a huge day for retailers but only the first of a roughly month-long extravaganza. And thanks to Abe Lincoln, who decreed Thanksgiving a national holiday, Franklin D. Roosevelt, who signed into law that it should fall on the fourth Thursday in November, and Pope Gregory XIII, who blessed the calendar we use by papal bull, 2012 has the longest possible shopping season. To explain: With Nov. 1 falling on Thursday, the fourth Thursday and …

The Turkey That Wouldn't Go Away I was a newlywed, cooking my first Thanksgiving dinner for extended family. My mother, my sister and myself were crowded into a tiny kitchen at our University City apartment, bumping into each other and generally getting into each other's way. Bags and boxes and pans were stacked in any available inch of space. My husband's grandmother had given us a large covered roaster pan, and for seven months, it had been taking up space in the cabinet. Now, I finally got to use it. Not well, however, as I remember the turkey was rather dry. But we could always count on my mother's dressing being perfect and the sweet potatoes having just the right amount of marshmallow topping. We gave the kitchen "a lick and a …
Thanksgiving in St. Louis brings back all sorts of emotions. Here are some of those emotions expressed in <140 characters. Keep tweeting, and we'll keep adding you to our list.
Join us in sharing messages about some of the things you're thankful for this holiday season.
A few days ago, Jeannine Beck from the Maplewood Chamber of Commerce asked me and other Maplewood business people to share messages of what we're thankful for. She compiled our responses and submitted a Local Voices post. I was inspired by the idea, so I asked some of my colleagues—the ones who make this website run smoothly each day—to share what they are thankful for, too. After finishing the turkey, please take a moment to share what you're thankful for in the comments section. Our messages are shared below. Happy Thanksgiving, Maplewood and Brentwood! -- I’m thankful for the many blessings in my life: wonderful friends and family, two adorable dogs, a rewarding career, and an incredible community. Above all, I’m thankful to be sharing …

Is the thought of endless turkey sandwiches making you lose your appetite for leftover Thanksgiving turkey? Beat the leftover turkey blues and think beyond the sandwich with casseroles, turnovers and salads.
Thanksgiving leftovers can become a blessing or a curse. Granted, the venerable turkey sandwich is a treat, but after a day or two, they're boring. While turkey sandwiches might be the perennial favorite, there are dozens of ways to use up leftover turkey. Leftovers, or what some cooks refer to as "planned over" meals, begin with a plan. Pick recipes that are easy to make while creating a new dish that isn't immediately recognized as including leftovers. Chili, enchiladas and pastas are excellent examples ways to use leftover cooked turkey. Think past the turkey. Thanksgiving's traditional sides can find new life in countless recipes. For example, I use leftover sweet potatoes to make a cream of sweet potato soup and those mashed potatoes…
Major deals are worth missing Thanksgiving dinner for these dedicated shoppers.
Before most families could even get the turkey in the oven, a band of shoppers set up camp at the Best Buy in Fairview Heights in pursuit of serious deals, like $200 televisions. By Wednesday afternoon, campers had set up eight tents, ensuring them the first spots in what is likely to be a long line. Best Buy opens for Black Friday sales at midnight for the first time ever, helping it compete with other big box stores, such as Target and Walmart, also opening the minute Thanksgiving Day is over. Sharp Aquos 40" series HDTVs, normally about $800, will be on sale for $200 in the early morning hours on Black Friday. Update: Two popular items are already sold out on Best Buy's online Black Friday sale: the Dynex 24" HDTV for $80 and the Lenovo…
If cooking isn't your thing, here's a list of restaurants open for dine-in or take-out on Thanksgiving.
A home-cooked meal with turkey, stuffing and cranberry is the Thanksgiving tradition, but there are still plenty of options for the non-traditional among us. For those looking to eat out on Thanksgiving but want something other than fast-food, several local restaurants and chains are staying open for the holiday. On the map above, click on a blue point to see details for Pujols 5, Lemp Mansion, Miss Sheri's Cafeteria, Sunset 44 Bistro, Tony's on Main Street, Yacovelli's, Maggianos, Craker Barrel and IHOP.

We got in and out with all of our video games in about 1 hour. We got some great deals and little hassle with long lines this year. Of course we avoided the big box stores. Once we left the mall and went to McDonald's it was a different story.   more ›
