DASHCAM: How Bad Is Parking at the Promenade, Really?

Ride with Patch on a tour of the parking lot between Trader Joe's and Target.

A recent article about the Brentwood Trader Joe's expanding into a space next next door brought comments about parking being, among others, "the worst lot ever." Patch wondered, how bad is the parking in front of Trader Joe's, really? A video camera on the dash recorded about 17 minutes of driving the aisles. The tour started at around 1:30 on Saturday afternoon. This video is the scariest minute that could be pulled out of that drive. There were no near-accidents, but it wasn't fun. Sorry it gives the experience of the lot without actually going into Trader Joe's!

I avoid it at all costs on a Saturday. The video also highlights the main complaint I have with the Promenade lot. The main thoroughfares of traffic are right in front of the stores so pedestrians and vehicles are always crossing paths. Too late now, but they should have put the traffic thoroughfare down the center away from the stores. The isles should be directional as others point out. Then …   more ›

Vegan Sloppy Joes Satisfy Meat Eater Cravings

During the first week of the vegan challenge, I focused on cooking at home using recipes from vegan cookbooks. Here's how it went.

I'm one week into my Vegan Challenge, and things are looking good. As someone who loves going out to eat, cooking at home has been a challenge; add the vegan requirement into the mix, and things have been a little crazy around here. But I've managed to stick to the challenge with no hiccups. And while not every meal I've cooked this week has been delicious--Vegan black bean burgers? Excellent! Vegan corn and potato stew? Not so excellent--it's certainly been fun getting to know my way around the kitchen. One of the best things I made this week was the thing I was most concerned about: vegan sloppy joes. I found the recipe in the Student's Go Vegan Cookbook that I picked up from Borders last week. I'm going to be honest. I enjoy some pretty…

Grocery Shopping For the Vegan Challenge

Today starts week one of the vegan challenge. Here's how I prepared.

Last week I announced that I was starting a vegan challenge. Well, this week I finally get to put all of my research to the test. One of the biggest worries that I had going into this challenge was what I would eat on a day to day basis. In my non-vegan life, I never planned meals or organized a grocery shopping list; I just bought what looked good. However, with a more restricted diet, I have found that it is essential to have a plan of action. Both vegan cookbooks that I picked up from Borders suggested compiling a meal plan and grocery list at the start of the week. Easy enough, right? I went through each cookbook, highlighting recipes that sounded appetizing. Red bean chili with corn? Black bean burgers with sweet corn relish? Déjà Vu …

Stop Whining and Start Wine-ing

Are you as clueless about wine as I am? Here are some good places in Maplewood and Brentwood to expand your wine knowledge.

Not to toot my own horn or anything, but when it comes to food, I know what I’m talking about. I can wax poetic about ganache, cavolo nero, and remoulade all day long. I know the difference between ceviche and sashimi. And who doesn’t love a tasty amuse bouche? Okay, so maybe I’ve just watched one too many episodes of Top Chef; however, my point still stands: I know food. Wine, on the other hand? I’m embarrassed to say that I know absolutely nothing about this fancy beverage. It’s a shame, really. The alcoholic delight often accompanies conversation about food; it’s the yin to food’s yang, so to speak. But when the subject of wine is brought up, my eyes glaze over in that “I have no idea what you’re talking about so I’m just going to smile…

Eovaldi's Deli Opens in Brentwood

Brentwood location offers slightly smaller menu and different hours than flagship store on the Hill.

Any resident of Brentwood can attest to the heavy traffic that Brentwood Boulevard is notorious for. Along with the massive influx of vehicles, the long stretch of road is spotted with so many shops, restaurants and office buildings; it can be dizzying at times. While you were speeding down the busy street on your way to Whole Foods or Nordstrom Rack, you may have missed a little gem nestled between office buildings and karaoke bars. This tiny eatery is called Eovaldi's Deli. If that name sounds familiar to you, you've been doing your foodie research. Eovaldi's has been around for years; its central location on the Hill has garnered much praise from consumers and critics alike—it even recently won the 2010 award for "Best Deli" from the …

Hey, J! Good question about the parking! I called up Eovaldi's and was told that there's a parking lot in the back (which it looks like you tried) as well as a parking garage. The parking garage is typically reserved for the office workers, but the guys (or gals!) at Eovaldi's have parking tokens for you to use if you'd like to park in the garage. Yay for free parking (and yummy food!)   more ›
