The Hornets soar past the Eagles, 25-7, in the Class 2 playoff opener.
There was one major concern Brentwood head football coach Scott Surgener had entering the Class 2 playoff opener against Northwest Academy Wednesday night. The Hornets had plenty of speed and athleticism. Despite turning the ball over four times and racking up over 100 penalty yards, Northwest Academy overcame those mistakes to move past Brentwood, 25-7, thanks in large part to senior tailback Mivon Green. "It wasn't a pretty game with all of our penalties and turnovers," Northwest Head Coach Terrance Dominick said. "But our defense stepped up big to help us pull out the victory." It was Green's quickness and elusiveness that helped the Hornets start fast and eventually put away the pesky Eagles. Green carried the ball 25 times for 222 …

Brentwood will face Northwest Academy and MRH will take on Principia.
Brentwood Brentwood High School (6-3) will meet Northwest Academy (8-1) in the regional state playoff game. This is the same point in last year's season when Brentwood beat Maplewood Richmond Heights 10-7 to move on to the state finals. The team the Eagles play this year, the Northwest Academy Hornets, have been ranked in the top ten in the state in the Associated Press poll for most of the season. They've averaged 37 points each game, and allowed their opponents to score only 7.4 on average. Both of those stats led their conference. Brentwood is powered by running backs Tyler Zelt and Andrew Erby. Zelt, a junior, has carried 124 times for 791 yards, an average of 6.4 per carry. Erby, a senior, has carried 98 times for 715 yards, an …

Brentwood's running game and defense carry the load for the Eagles.
Stephen Surgener made sure to send a message to his Brentwood High School football teammates prior to facing Principia for the Class 2, District 3 championship Friday night. "We just wanted to go out there and play as hard as we could," the senior center and linebacker said. "So I went up to a lot of our players before the game to try to get them as hyped up as possible to get this win." Mission accomplished. Fueled by a smash-mouth rushing attack and a dominant defensive effort, the Eagles ran over the Panthers en route to a convincing 31-0 shutout victory. The win secured Brentwood's third district championship in the last four years. "It's a big thing," Surgener said. "We didn't do a lot of that before I got to high school. Now I can …

Eagles rally from 14 points down to win in double overtime.
HILLSBORO – Ryan Marshall never doubted himself or his kicking abilities. And Brentwood head football coach Scott Surgener had the utmost confidence in his senior place-kicker. Yet despite missing two field goals, including a potential game-winner in the first overtime, Marshall never wavered when his team needed him the most Friday night. Marshall kicked a 26-yard field goal and Dan Lynch recovered a fumble on Grandview's ensuing possession to seal Brentwood's 17-14 double-overtime victory, which clinched a Class 2 state playoff berth. "It definitely felt pretty good to see that one go through, especially since I'm a senior," Marshall said with a big smile. "We've been talking about getting a district championship all year, and I didn't …

Moore's three touchdowns powers Brentwood to a 34-8 victory on Friday night.
With fresh legs and healed bodies following a bye week, Brentwood wasted little time taking full command against outmanned Barat Academy on Friday night. The Eagles scored three times—their first touchdown at the 70-second mark—in the game's opening 7:49 to quickly break open the game. Senior Elie Moore led the offense to a convincing 34-8 victory over winless Barat Academy on middle school night. "It was good to see us start off so fast and keep that momentum the entire first half," Brentwood head coach Scott Surgener said. "Against a team like Barat Academy, which is in the beginning stages of building a program, we have to be able to take control of the ball game early." The quick start was sparked by a nice kickoff return from junior …

Zelt's touchdown, Marshall's PAT lift Eagles over Wildcats, 7-6
While Brentwood's starting tailback Andrew Erby usually gets the bulk of the running load each game, Tyler Zelt makes the most of his carries when having his number called. With Erby sidelined due to a sprained ankle in the fourth quarter, Zelt sparked a game-winning drive that saw everyone on offense play a key role in pulling off a stunning homecoming victory Friday night. Zelt capped a 15-play, 83-yard drive when he darted off left tackle and pushed his way into the end zone for a 6-yard touchdown run with only 24 ticks left on the clock. Ryan Marshall punctuated the Eagles' comeback, kicking the extra point through the uprights for a 7-6 win over the Cuba Wildcats. "It was wild man," said Zelt, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound junior. "Our team …
