The board met in a special meeting on Monday.
The board of the Brentwood Public Library met on Monday, Oct. 22, in a special meeting, and voted to keep the book, Uncle Bobby's Wedding on the shelves, reported The St. Louis Post Dispatch today. The board sent a letter to James Vandervoort, the resident who had challenged the book being in the library. It was reprinted in the St. Louis Post Dispatch. "The Brentwood Library Board of Trustees had an emergency meeting on Monday, October 22, 2012, and all nine members were present. We had a long and thoughtful discussion, reviewing your comments on the Request for Reconsideration form for “Uncle Bobby’s Wedding”, Vicki Woods’ reply to you, the conversation from last week’s meeting, and our Board Policies regarding the reconsideration …
All nine libraries in the consortium would lose the book, if the Brentwood Library board votes to remove it.
The book, Uncle Bobby's Wedding, now being contested at the Brentwood Public Library, would be gone from The Municipal Library Consortium catalogue if Brentwood removed it. A Brentwood resident has asked that it be taken off the shelves. His stand is that the main topic of the book is same-sex marriage, which is illegal in Missouri. The Maplewood Public Library is also in the group, and Maplewood director Terrence Donnelly said Brentwood bought the book. "They own the book, they bought it with their own money," he said. "It's a shared catalogue, but if you buy a book, it belongs to you, so if they withdrew it, it would be gone for everybody." The Brentwood Library board is scheduled to vote on the book's future at its Nov. 12 meeting. …

The president of the Brentwood library board said she has no problem keeping it in the library.
The Brentwood Library board could vote on the contested book, Uncle Bobby’s Wedding, before its next scheduled meeting. Brentwood resident, James Vandervoort, said in the Oct. 15 library board meeting the book is about gay marriage, and wants it removed from the library. Board president Sheila Lenkman said library director Vicki Woods suggested an early email vote, but Lenkman said not enough of the board has weighed in to know if that could happen. The next scheduled meeting is Nov. 12. A vote was on the agenda for the Oct. 8 and 15th meetings, but there wasn’t a quorum at either one. Lenkman said she’s in favor of not voting early. “We had two people say that they thought we should just stick with the date, because it looks suspicious …

A resident's daughter brought the book home, and now he wants it removed from the library.
The Brentwood Public Library hasn’t had a book challenged in the seven years that Ellen Walther has been on the board, but a children’s book that touches on the subject of gay marriage is now under consideration to be removed. Brentwood resident James Vandervoort’s daughter brought home the book, Uncle Bobby’s Wedding, without his knowledge, and now he wants it removed from the shelves. He met with the library board (though not a quorum) Monday, Oct. 15, to make his case. "The purpose of the book is to help foster acceptance, and to glorify homosexual marriage," he said. "I think that’s a realistic synopsis of what the book is about." Using gerbils as characters, a girl (gerbil) is upset because her favorite uncle is getting married, and …
