Volunteers Needed to Sort Donations

Round up of volunteer opportunities in December.

GED Classroom Volunteers Needed GED classroom volunteers are needed to tutor adults in basic reading, writing, and math. Classes are held at St. Charles Community College as well as seven off-campus locations. One is sure to be close to your home. Volunteers must have a high school diploma and be at least 18 years old, positive, friendly, and patient. Training is provided and no previous experience is necessary. Help with Scouting for Food Scouting for Food is a food drive Nov. 17. Scouts collect items to serve pantries during the holiday season. As Hurricane Sandy Hits, St. Louis Red Cross Volunteers Are There

Flights have been canceled at Lambert airport; the American Red Cross Greater St. Louis Region has dispatched 14 volunteers and five emergency response vehicles; Ameren is also dispatching utility workers east.

As the East Coast begins to be hammered by Hurricane Sandy, the St. Louis chapter of the American Red Cross has dispatched regional volunteers and emergency response vehicles to the storm-battered area. The American Red Cross Greater St. Louis Region, based in Creve Coeur, has now sent 14 volunteers and five emergency response vehicles, as the storm is already leaving tens of thousands without power.  More from the Red Cross: These volunteers from around the region are serving in the relief efforts in New York, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Maryland. Benefit Concert Will Aid Richmond Heights Students

Concert for a Cause happens Aug. 22 at Ryan Hummert Park.

A benefit concert planned next month at Ryan Hummert Park will help students at a Richmond Heights elementary school. Donations of specified food items and suitcases on wheels will be accepted during Concert for a Cause at 6 p.m. Aug. 22. The items will benefit students at Maplewood Richmond Heights Elementary School in Richmond Heights and at the Maplewood Richmond Heights Early Childhood Center in Maplewood. Maplewood band UJ & The Down Home Blues will perform at the event, which is sponsored by the Maplewood Community Betterment Foundation and the Maplewood Richmond Heights School District. Riders Needed Memorial Day to Honor Freedom Fighters

Parade-like run to honor current military members, veterans and their families will begin in Fenton and end in High Ridge.

A new charitable foundation is sponsoring a Freedom Run that will circle St. Louis on Memorial Day to honor current military members, veterans and their families. The group, called Faces of Freedom Fighters, is seeking participants who will ride in the parade-like run in cars and trucks and on motorcycles. Entrants must register by Wednesday, May 25.  “We have about 100 participants so far, but we’re hoping for more,” said Martin Harris, the group’s founder and executive director. “We think this is the first time a run will circle the St. Louis area for veterans.” The run will begin in the parking lot of Stratford Inn at 800 S. Knights of Columbus Cook for a Cause

The barbecue raises money for area hospitals, the Special Olympics and other organizations.

Members of Knights of Columbus and ribs for the people who stopped by the barbecue at Schaeffer Shell. During the second weekend of each month from March through November (except August, when it's too hot), look for a Knights of Columbus crew at the corner of Big Bend Boulevard and Manchester Road. They'll be serving up delicious barbecue for passersby and drive-up customers. The proceeds benefit St. Vincent de Paul, Special Olympics and Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital. September's barbecue will raise money for Backstoppers. The Knights of Columbus started raising money for the organization when Maplewood firefighter Ryan Hummert was killed in the line of duty in 2008.
