The store construction should be completed by mid-summer.
A major remodel and redesign of the Schnucks Store in Brentwood began this month and is expected to be completed by mid-summer. Fairview Heights-based construction-management firm IMPACT Strategies was hired to lead the aggressive redesign. Kuhlmann Design Group is responsible for creating the new design concept for both the interior and exterior of the building. See our previous story: Renovation at Schnucks Would Include Space for New Businesses Mike Voss, project manager for IMPACT Strategies, said in a press release that the store will remain fully operational throughout the construction process so as not to disrupt customers’ shopping experiences. “We are doing all we can to minimize the intrusion for customers as we work to create a…

The new space would host retail businesses and offices.
The Schnucks located at the corner of Manchester Road and Brentwood Boulevard could be getting a facelift soon. The property's owner, Regency Center from Cincinnati, OH, submitted an application with the city of Brentwood seeking several renovations. The application has been reviewed by the Brentwood Planning and Zoning Commission, and a subcommittee is expected to continue discussions with the developer during a meeting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, stated Bola Akande, city administrator for Brentwood, in an email to Patch. Mayor Pat Kelly first announced the proposed renovation during his State of the City Address last week. In the plan, Schnucks would gain improvements in the interior, building facade, landscaping and 14 new light fixtures. …

A proposal to use comment cards in Board of Aldermen meetings were in five of the weekly city administrator’s reports.
It seems the concern about residents needing to fill out comment cards before speaking in a Brentwood Board of Aldermen meeting was unfounded. It was reported on Aug. 10 in Maplewood-Brentwood Patch that City Administrator Bola Akande had made the suggestion. In the Aug. 20 Board of Alderman meeting, mayor Pat Kelly said they won’t be used in Board of Aldermen meetings. “I don’t like them,” he said. “I don’t think it’s appropriate.” He said the Public Safety Committee had started using comment cards, and City Administrator Bola Akande took the initiative to propose using them for Board of Aldermen meetings. Alderwoman Cindy Manestar, by email on Wednesday, said the suggestion was included in the weekly (every Friday) city administrator’s …

The Brentwood alderwoman doesn't like a proposal that department heads report to the city administrator and not committees.
Brentwood Ward 2 alderwoman Cindy Manestar sent her constituents an email on what she called a "hot topic." In the Aug. 13 email newsletter, which was forwarded to Patch and she gave permission to use, Manestar expressed a concern about changes to Brentwood's organizational structure that she said does not meet its current codes. Instead of department heads reporting to a committee, they will report to the city administrator. "This drastic structure change would alter the duties and responsibilities of each level of government within our city and minimalize the role of the board of aldermen. It would remove the board from involvement in certain steps and processes that we currently oversee," she stated in her newsletter. “So if you sum …

The asbestos abatement company filed its paperwork on Wednesday.
The asbestos abatement firm contracted to clean up the Sports Attic filed paperwork for a permit on Wednesday, which means work will start next week, according to AALCO administrative assistant Jen Goeken. The remains of the Sports Attic sports bar have been there since April 13, when the building was destroyed by fire. "As soon as we get the OK from St. Louis County, then I’ll be going down to Brentwood to apply for their demolition permit," Goeken said. City Administrator Bola Akande said Wednesday afternoon the abatement contractor getting its permit has been the hold-up. "They even sent out notices to the properties close-by that they would be starting in six to seven days," Akande said. "This was July 23 or so. I don’t know if they …
The Public Safety Committee is already using them.
There could be a change in the way public comments are handled at Brentwood city council meetings. City Administrator Bola Akande has suggested that anyone who wants to comment or ask a question in a meeting would need to fill out a card first. Then (deputy city clerk) Octavia Pittman or Akande would give it to the mayor. Those wanting to comment would then be called on to come to the podium. Akande said how it would go from there is undetermined at this point. “At the last meeting we had some residents complain that because now that we’re on YouTube, they feel reluctant to be on camera mentioning their home address,” Akande said. She said she might not necessarily read the address out loud, but it would still be reflected in the minutes. …

Kelly defended the city-paid benefit and himself in an acrimonious meeting where he was told more than once to resign.
The Brentwood Board of Aldermen voted Monday night to end city-paid health care for elected officials, a benefit that has been maligned by many residents and one vocal alderwoman. The decision follows exposure from Fox 2 News, including an interview with Mayor Pat Kelly at City Hall. The motion by Alderwoman Maureen Saunders passed in a 4-3 vote minus Alderman Andy Leahy, who recused himself and stormed out of the room saying his vote would be “tainted.” There was some back-and-forth between Leahy and Saunders, but it wasn’t clear what Leahy meant by the word. (Keep up with all the Brentwood news, get Maplewood-Brentwood Patch free in your inbox every day.) “It’s just a shame they didn’t end (the health insurance benefit) at the beginning…

After months of questions from residents and stories from multiple media outlets, the Brentwood Board of Aldermen is expected to discuss a health care benefit that's available to only some of the elected officials.
An update about the health care benefit that's available for some of Brentwood's elected officials is expected during a Board of Aldermen meeting on Monday night. The tentative agenda for the 6 p.m. meeting includes an item about the health benefit. Newly-elected officials Maureen Saunders and Patrick Toohey aren't eligible for coverage because the city has been phasing out the benefit. Alderwoman Cindy Manestar, also new, gets the benefit through her husband, Jeff Manestar, a Brentwood police officer. Residents have questioned the legality of offering health care to some of the aldermen but not others. Brentwood officials received a legal opinion regarding the benefit on May 30, but that opinion hasn't been made available to the public. …

“Research is underway,” is the standard response to questions.
Information about the city-paid health insurance available to Brentwood’s elected officials has slammed shut, with Patch being directed by City Administrator Bola Akande to fill out a formal request for access to public records through the Sunshine Law. The Sunshine Law requires public governmental bodies to open their meetings and records to the public. At Akande’s request, Patch initially emailed her its questions about the city’s practice of providing free health insurance to its part-time officials. None were answered. Here are some of the questions we asked: Akande said in an email that the city received multiple sunshine requests for information and that “research is underway.” Patch responded with another email and asked Akande …

Two hot-button topics will be discussed at the Brentwood Board of Aldermen meeting at the Recreation Complex at 6 p.m. June 11.
Brentwood Recreation Complex Brentwood mayor Pat Kelly asked the aldermen to discuss the future of Brentwood's Recreation Complex for 20 minutes at the May 21 meeting, which resulted in a much longer discussion with no consensus reached. The city considered bringing a $9 million bond issue to the voters last year to renovate the complex but it never got out of the ways and means committee. Alderman Keith Robertson had advocated for the bond issue last year. He was in favor of a plan to bring the building up to code, improve the ice rink, and add a fitness center and multi-use gym. Alderman Andrew Leahy was concerned that voters wouldn’t approve a bond issue in the midst of the down economy. He had voted against the proposal in April. …
