Brentwood Girls Soccer Coach Cory Grage Talks About the Season, See Practice Photos

Brentwood starts its season against Maplewood Richmond Heights.

Brentwood girls soccer coach Cory Grage talks about losing key players, and who's come back and where they're playing. The girls start their season Wednesday at the Bishop Dubourg tournament against Maplewood Richmond Heights. Last year Brentwood beat MRH both times in the season, 8-0 and 6-0. MRH Soccer Grabs 3rd Win at Brentwood's Expense

The Eagles went to Maplewood with the better record.

Brentwood boys soccer went to Maplewood Richmond Heights looking for a win, instead they were shutout 1-0. Maplewood goal keeper, senior, Austin Golden was golden. The win puts MRH at 3 wins and 10 loses, and the Eagles slip to 4-6. See more game photos at Maplewood-Brentwood Patch Facebook. Senior, Will Wadsworth scored the Blue Devils goal, with an assist from junior, Evan Powell, with 19 minutes remaining in the game. Brentwood Soccer Improves, Still Loses to Bayless

Bayless soccer used seven different players to score seven goals in its win over Brentwood on Friday. The score was 5-0 for Bayless at the half. Brentwood brothers, Josh and Dylan McGehee found the goal in the second period for a 7-2 final. Bayless coach David Pozzo said the plan was to get up on the Eagles early. “Last game they fought us pretty good all the way up to the half and we kind of broke them in the second half,” he said. Eagle Girls Downed by Bombers in Soccer Districts for Second Year

Last year it was 4-0, this year the Bombers beat the Eagles 3-1.

The three teams in girls Class 1 District 4 tournament finished the same order this year as least. John Burroughs had an easy time with Maplewood Richmond Heights in the first round, then overcame top-seeded Brentwood in the final Last year it was a 4-0 final. This year, a second-half Sammi Merlotti bending shot that ricocheted off the left post into the goal gave the Eagles their single point of the game. “Those are the sorts of things we’ve come to expect from her,” Brentwood coach Cory Grage said, “We just needed a couple more today. “ Merlotti, a senior, has signed to play with St. Louis Community College next year. Brentwood Soccer Player Signs at STLCC

Sammi Merlotti impressed the STLCC coach even when she was injured. He's happy to have her now.

Just about a year ago, Brentwood soccer player Sammi Merlotti had a knee injury that finished her season. Now, her future looks bright. Merlotti signed to play soccer with the St. Louis Community College Archers in a ceremony at Brentwood with both Corey Grage, her Brentwood coach, and Juergen Huettner, her future coach at her side. Soccer Districts Start for MRH, Brentwood

Brentwood's season ended in districts but MRH begins play on Tuesday night.

Maplewood Richmond Heights soccer star John Barron is now fourth in the area in scoring with 32 goals and 8 assists for the Blue Devils this year. He and teammate Sam Martin (21 goals, 12 assists) make up one of the most dangerous tandems in the state, and will also look to showcase their skills when district play begins for the Devils on Tuesday night against Cleveland NJROTC. MRH, which is the host school in Class 1 District 2, is the No. 2 seed in the district, and would take on South Central Athletic Association champion and No. 1 seed Bayless, in a potentially exciting district championship game on Thursday at 6:15 p.m. Brentwood, one of the few teams that began district play over the weekend, saw its season end with a 7-0 loss to …

Sports Update: MRH, Brentwood Football Guaranteed Playoff Spots

With one week left in the season, both teams have clinched spots in the postseason.

The Maplewood Richmond Heights and Brentwood football teams find themselves in similar boats heading into the final week of the regular season this week. MRH, one of the state’s most exciting teams, is in the most enviable position, having already clinched itself a spot in the state playoffs, the district championship, and a first round home game, with big wins over Carnahan and Northwest Academy the last two weeks. The Devils (7-2) will finish out regular season play with a game in Crystal City, MO, against Lift for Life Academy (2-7). Brentwood earned its spot in the playoffs last Friday with a commanding 35-0 home win over Grandview. The Eagles can now claim the outright district championship, and get a home playoff game, if they can …

Sports Update: Brentwood Volleyball Keeps Winning

This weekly roundup includes updates from each Brentwood sports team.

The Brentwood girls softball team lost in the first round of the district playoffs to Valley Park, and finished its season with a 6-8 record. The Eagles were led this year by seniors Alaina Youngstrom and Kate Nikodym, junior Haley Holtgrieve, and sophomores Allison Durham and Shawn Durham. The Brentwood boys soccer team had a rough week too. They lost three matches by a combined score of 17-1 to McCluer, Maplewood, and St. Pius X. With a record of 2-12, the Eagles will play three games this week, at home against Crossroads Prep on Tuesday, at Metro High on Wednesday, and at home against Clayton on Thursday. The Brentwood girls volleyball team had a good week. The Eagles won both their matches last week, avenging a loss to rival Maplewood …

Brentwood Sports Update: Girls Softball Starts Districts

Girls softball district playoffs begin on Wednesday, with Brentwood traveling to Valley Park.

The big news in high school sports this week is the beginning of the girls softball district playoffs, which for most teams will get underway Wednesday afternoon with games all over the state. Brentwood will open the district tournament at Valley Park on Wednesday. The Eagles softball team enters the tournament on a high note. The Eagles had a huge 17-7 win against district foe Life for Life Academy on Monday. The Brentwood girls softball team was named the No. 5 seed in Class 2 District 5, and will take on No. 4 seed Valley Park in a first round playoff matchup on Wednesday. The Eagles will go into that contest on a bit of a hot streak, having won six of their last seven, including the past three games. Brentwood trailed Cleveland NJROTC …

Brentwood Soccer Grabs First Win

The weekly sports roundup offers updates on Brentwood sports.

The Brentwood boys soccer team picked up its first win of the year on Wednesday, when it defeated Hancock 4-3. The Eagles had lost their first six contests of the year, and had only scored five goals all year, when they exploded for four scores in the second half, in a thrilling home win over the Tigers. This week, Brentwood has three matches scheduled. On Monday, the Eagles will play at North County Tech; on Tuesday, they’ll play Valley Park at the Anheuser-Busch Soccer Park in Fenton; and on Friday, Brentwood will play at Bayless. All three matches are scheduled to start at 4 p.m. The Brentwood girls softball team is just 2-8 this season, but boy, have the two Eagle wins been something else.
