New Brentwood School Superintendent: Budget Trimmed Way Back

David Faulkner said he wants the mindset to be to save money where ever possible.

David Faulkner is almost 50 years old and has been in education 25 of those years. This year he’s taking over as superintendent of the Brentwood School District. “It’s been a lot to learn starting from day one, although I’ve had the advantage of seeing it from across the hall,” he said. Faulker had been the assistant superintendent to former superintendent, Dr. Charles Penberthy. Penberthy announced his retirement last year. “It was really nice,” Faulkner said, “having that long transition between January when I was appointed and July 1 when I took over, because I got to pay more attention to how things were done.” The new teachers came in last week for orientation. He said he wants the new hires to know the “unique nature of Brentwood.” …

62 Graduate From Brentwood High School

Brentwood principal Dr. Don Rugraff said the class earned more than $1.5 million in scholarships.

Brentwood High School students heard mostly the wisdom of their peers in their graduation ceremony Friday. Whitney Howard gave the opening remarks, Breyona Jackson and Christopher Reichert tag-teamed the senior class address, and Paige Anderson gave the closing remarks. They're all in the Brentwood class of 2012. Jackson told her classmates to enjoy the success they've earned. See more photos on Maplewood-Brentwood Patch Facebook. (Like it!) Reichert said Brentwood is more than a school, it's a family. He also said, "No one actually leaves Brentwood (pause for laughter and applause), because Brentwood goes with you." Anderson said she'd known some of her classmates since kindergarten. She said Brentwood weaves a fabric that stretches over …

Brentwood School Superintendent Surprised by Honor

Dr. Penberthy has been honored by the school where he received his first degree.

Brentwood Superintendent of Schools Dr. Charles Penberthy found a surprise in the mail recently. He was selected to receive the Distinguished Alumni Award from the school where he began his higher education, Mineral Area College, in Park Hills, MO. "It was unexpected, that's for sure," Penberthy said. He said he was invited to this year's commencement to receive the recognition. He said he spent two years at the junior college, about 65 miles south of Brentwood. Penberthy is in his last year as the Brentwood School District Superintendent. He's retiring at the end of the school year, and will be replaced by David Faulkner, currently the assistant to superintendent.   Mineral Area College sent the following information on Penberthy along …

Penberthy Outlines 2012-13 School Budget Cuts

The superintendent of the Brentwood School District said the district ran in the red this year and last. So the Board of Education has made decisions in hopes of turning that around.

The Brentwood School District ran in the red last year, and it will do so this year too. But a decision the Board of Education made at its Feb. 7 meeting should keep 2012-13 in the black. The board approved an approximately $739,000 cut in the 2012-13 school year budget. That's in addition to $134,000 already trimmed from this year’s budget. Together, roughly $873,000 in expenses has been cut. “We weathered the storm longer than other districts, but it’s caught up with us now,” said Dr. Charles Penberthy, superintendent of the school district. In the future, the district won't be able to use reserves to provide the services and programs it has in the past. He said the board kept two things in mind in when making its decisions: Effects on …

Ladue Administrator Will Be Brentwood's New Assistant Superintendent

She's been an administrator for 11 years, but still considers herself a teacher.

Dr. Joan Oakley, assistant superintendent of educational leadership in the Ladue School District, will join the Brentwood School District as assistant superintendent. She succeeds David Faulkner, who will become superintendent in July. Faulkner will succeed Dr. Charles Penberthy, who is retiring after this year. Oakley previously served as the director of student services and an assistant principal at Ladue Horton Watkins High School. “I am thrilled to be the new assistant superintendent in Brentwood,” she said. Some Brentwood teachers and administrators already know Oakley. She has worked with many of them, including Faulkner, for the past nine years in a collaborative school. The alternative program is shared by Brentwood, Ladue and …

Brentwood Parents Focus on Behrmann's Ouster During School Board Meeting

Parents ask questions, but don't get answers, as board members cite privacy concerns.

Probably the most interesting thing about the Brentwood Board of Education meeting Tuesday night was not what was said, but rather what wasn’t said—or answered—and that is: Why is McGrath Elementary School's principal Kathleen Behrmann being bounced from her job after eight years? Parents peppered the board with comments and questions from their seats in the audience and in front of the microphone during an extended open comment period before the meeting and, again, at the end of the two-hour meeting. Roughly 45 people attended the meeting. Eight parents spoke; some pointedly, like attorney Jim Malone, who has a child at McGrath. He wanted to talk about the contract, and asked if Behrmann’s contract is being revoked to one year, or not …

Ed, Dr. Penworthy told Kathleen Behrmann she was being terminated due to low MAP scores and that parents don't like her. These are both INCORRECT! McGrath's MAP scores have been higher than the district scores in some of the recent years and we know the parents love Mrs. Behrmann as witnessed by the recent turnout at the board meeting.   more ›

Questions Remain After McGrath Principal's Ouster

The school board voted against extending the contract of Kathleen Behrmann, who has worked as McGrath Elementary School's principal since 2004.

*Correction: Patch previously posted an incorrect vote count. One school board member was absent from the meeting. We are very sorry for the error. Parents of students in McGrath Elementary School recently received an email that noted the school district was in the process of hiring a new principal for the next school year. On Feb. 17, Superintendent Dr. Charles Penberthy sent the email, which noted that Principal Kathleen Behrmann would be taking another position in the school district. The email came as a shock to Behrmann, who said she never agreed to a move. She only recently learned about losing her job as principal, Behrmann said. "Frankly, I thought I was doing an awesome job," said Behrmann, who has worked at McGrath since 2000 and…

Drug Testing Debate Draws Brentwood Support

School district officials, public safety officers, parents and students were among those who attended a forum on Monday to discuss the Brentwood School District's drug policy.

Any drug policy in Brentwood schools would include a mix of preventative education and punishment for drug abuse, said school district officials to a group of community leaders, parents and students on Monday night. But whether the addition of a drug testing program is the best way to address the issue remains unknown. (For up-to-the-minute updates about the Brentwood community, 'Like' us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/MaplewoodBrentwoodPatch) Nearly 60 people attended a forum in the Brentwood School District Conference Center to discuss the issue of drug abuse in Brentwood hallways, and to identify ways to battle any drug problems in the community. Many of the attendees sat on a panel comprised of public safety officers, school …

Evan and Scott, while I don’t believe I have all the answers, I am willing to hear both sides. The fire department stated that there had been several Heroin overdoses within the city of Brentwood. While none of these were high school students, the drug is in Brentwood. With the increase of cars being broken into within the city of Brentwood, I suspect someone is already feeding an addiction to …   more ›

Update: David Faulkner Named Brentwood Superintendent

Faulkner has worked in the Brentwood School District since 2004.

(Update 6:15 p.m. after an interview with David Faulkner) David Faulkner, the current assistant to superintendent Dr. Charles Penberthy, has been named superintendent of the Brentwood School District. The appointment will become effective July 1, the day after Penberthy's retirement begins. "I am thrilled that the board selected me," Faulkner said. "Beyond my excitement, I also know there's a lot of work to be done." (For real-time updates about the Brentwood community, 'Like' us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/MaplewoodBrentwoodPatch) The Brentwood Board of Education was unanimous in the selection, said Chris Jones, president of the school board, when reached by phone on Monday. After a lengthy selection process, the board chose Faulkner …

Who Should Be Brentwood's Next Superintendent?

The Brentwood Board of Education hired a consultant to gather feedback from administrators, teachers and community members.

Brentwood resident Kent Krimmel wonders whether the Brentwood School District's next superintendent should only have a few years of experience. With most folks weathering a tough economic storm, Krimmel says the district could save some money by hiring a superintendent with a thin resume. He compared the district's pending decision to the one made by the St. Louis Cardinals when they chose to hire Mike Matheny instead of the more-experienced Terry Francona. Just as the Cardinals have set up Matheny with a championship-winning team, Brentwood schools have set up their next chief with small class sizes, high-achieving students and great support from the community. "Everything seems in place for a successful transition," Krimmel said. Krimmel…
