Two Brentwood School Board Terms Expire in 2013, Both Plan to Run Again

Chris Jones, the current president and Regina Gahr will run to maintain their seats.

The two Brentwood School Board members, Regina Gahr and Chris Jones, whose terms are expiring this year, are planning to run for another term. Gahr has served five terms over 15 years so far. She had served as vice president of the board until April 2011, when Katrina Harper moved into the role. "I actually really enjoy being on the board," Gahr said. "I feel like it is important for the seniors in Brentwood, the tax paying constituents who have no children in the school district, to have someone on the board who can speak for them. I feel like I fill that roll. I’m mainly more for the seniors, because I am one." Chris Jones is the current board president. He was elected president in 2011, replacing Keith Rabenberg. Jones has served three …

Questions Remain After McGrath Principal's Ouster

The school board voted against extending the contract of Kathleen Behrmann, who has worked as McGrath Elementary School's principal since 2004.

*Correction: Patch previously posted an incorrect vote count. One school board member was absent from the meeting. We are very sorry for the error. Parents of students in McGrath Elementary School recently received an email that noted the school district was in the process of hiring a new principal for the next school year. On Feb. 17, Superintendent Dr. Charles Penberthy sent the email, which noted that Principal Kathleen Behrmann would be taking another position in the school district. The email came as a shock to Behrmann, who said she never agreed to a move. She only recently learned about losing her job as principal, Behrmann said. "Frankly, I thought I was doing an awesome job," said Behrmann, who has worked at McGrath since 2000 and…

Drury Asks for Tax Breaks to Build Brentwood Hotel

The hotel would be located at the corner of Brentwood Boulevard and Eager Road.

A plan to construct a Drury hotel in Brentwood would require $5.7 million in taxpayer assistance, representatives from the hotel company said on Thursday night. They presented the plan during a meeting of the Brentwood Redevelopment Corporation, a nine-member public body charged with discussing redevelopment proposals in Brentwood. The hotel project would include 215 rooms and a 7,500 square-foot restaurant on 4.6 acres at the corner of Brentwood Boulevard and Eager Road. Meeting facilities, an exercise room and an indoor and outdoor pool are also planned for the hotel. "It's an important piece of property in Brentwood and an extremely good developer," said John Geppert, a Brentwood resident and chairman of the Brentwood Redevelopment …

CORRECTION: Property Tax Hike Proposed by Brentwood School District

The school board will meet Tuesday night to vote on a new rate.

*Correction (1:59 p.m.) — An earlier version of this article listed incorrect math to calculate a homeowner's expected tax bill. We are sorry for the error. On Tuesday, the Brentwood Board of Education is scheduled to vote on a property tax increase for the upcoming year. The meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. at the Brentwood School District Conference Center. The proposed tax hike follows a decline in assessed valuation in Brentwood for the fourth straight year. While residential valuation actually increased by nearly $700,000 since last year, commercial valuation dropped by $6 million. The lower valuation equates to fewer tax dollars for the school district unless the school board increases taxes. The proposed rate is listed below. *For a $…

could you give us the amount of revenue which the district is claiming they lost? And if they increase the tax rate, I assume this is for all property? Why not just increase the rate for commercial property, since that is where the loss is supposedly coming from. How much additional revenue will be generated by the increase in the tax rate? Answering those questions will make it easier for us to …   more ›

Drug Testing in Brentwood Schools? School Board Weighs In

A disagreement about how prevalent drugs are in Brentwood schools was highlighted during a Brentwood Board of Education discussion on Tuesday night.

Brentwood High School students who participate in extracurricular activities could soon be required to comply with randomized drug testing. The Brentwood Board of Education held a lengthy discussion about the possibility during a meeting on Tuesday in the Brentwood School District Conference Center. Board member Katrina Harper introduced the potential policy after reviewing similar policies in other school districts. “It’s pretty common knowledge that we have drugs in Brentwood,” Harper said. “That many of our students are using drugs, have been using drugs for a long time.” Superintendent Dr. Charles Penberthy introduced the topic with pitfalls to avoid. Federal law only allows schools to test students involved in extracurricular …

Outside Firm to Help With Superintendent Search

The process will be similar to when Dr. Penberthy was hired nine years ago.

The Brentwood Board of Education will use an outside firm to guide the process of hiring a new district superintendent. It's the same process the school board used nine years ago when it hired Dr. Charles Penberthy, the current superintendent who recently announced his intent to retire at the end of the school year. School board president Chris Jones made the announcement during a meeting on Tuesday night in the Brentwood School District Conference Center. The board hasn't released the name of the firm yet, but a representative will be interviewed at the next school board meeting on Sept. 20, Jones said. Using focus groups with faculty, staff and community members, the firm will build a profile for what the school district seeks in a new …

I'll be excited to see who ends up as the next superintendent. The position could be handed down to David Faulkner - who would be an excellent choice - but our district has issues when it comes to handing people positions without evaluating all possible candidates (i.e. football coaches, etc.) May the best man win!   more ›

Brentwood Class of 2011 Graduates

The cumulative ACT score is 24.25, the highest ever.

Families packed the Brentwood High School auditorium to see graduates receive their diplomas on Friday night. In a ceremony that moved right along, Principal Dr. Don Rugraff welcomed the families, then introduced senior Alvin Lan, who played the Senior Performance, a piece by Chopin on a piano that was rolled onto the stage. He recognized the class salutatorian, Alvin Lan, who came to the front for the second time. Lan graduated with a 4.27 grade point average. Lan will travel to Germany to study on a scholarship. Ken Wolfe, a former Brentwood Middle School teacher, gave the address. His talk enlarged on themes he taught many of the graduates when he had them in middle school. He charged them to save America. The valedictorian was Jason …
