Ruth Swallow Served Maplewood 25 Years, Still Does

The mayor recognized Swallow for her service at the recent council meeting.

Ruth Swallow, who began working for the City of Maplewood 25 years ago, was recognized for her service at the city council meeting on Tuesday. Maplewood city manager Marty Corcoran hired Swallow as a telephone receptionist on Oct. 12, 1987. She was appointed acting court clerk in May 1988 and remained there until July, 1993. She then accepted a position with the Maplewood Police Department as a dispatcher, and in May, 2000 became the police secretary. In 2005, she was once again appointed the court administrator and still remains in the courts. Artist Finalist in $6,000 Bid to Beautify Maplewood

Eric Woods of Firecracker Press beat out the other two semi-finalists to paint downtown Maplewood's utility boxes.

Five utility boxes along Manchester Road will become works of art in time for Maplewood's sixth annual Let Them Eat Art on July 8. During a meeting on Wednesday, a committee made up of city officials and community members selected Eric Woods, founder of Firecracker Press, to design the boxes. He was selected as the finalist in an open call contest for local artists. Firecracker Press is a printmaking studio in the Cherokee District. Committee members said Woods' concept ties together Maplewood's rich history to its dynamic present and future. Iconic Route 66 Hits Maplewood's Sidewalks

The storied highway of American legend lives on in a new series of commemorative plaques along Manchester Road.

Maplewood residents can now get their kicks on Manchester Road, thanks to the recent installation of commemorative Route 66 markers throughout the historic downtown area. "They are a great addition to the 'hot spot' of Maplewood," said Matt Gibbs, who works with his father Jerry at J & E's Office City in downtown Maplewood. The markers are situated in the sidewalk in historic Maplewood, commemorating longtime and bygone sights from Route 66's heyday, including six businesses from those days that endure to the present. The markers showcase the business's name and description within the iconic Route 66 sign outline.
