Crow's Nest is Highlighted for Vegetarian Fare

The downtown Maplewood restaurant was named in the Riverfront Times as a place where vegetarians "can order good grub that ain't got no meat."

Vegetarians' food options at restaurants sometimes can be lacking. Sure, most restaurants have salads, but that's often it. Enter The Veggielante, a series of blog posts on The Riverfront Times' website highlighting restaurants with vegetarian dishes around St. Louis. "We're not here to proselytize about greening up your diet. Our only motive is to spread the word about places where you can order good grub that ain't got no meat," writes Tara Mahadevan.  Lucky for restaurant-goers in Maplewood, our very own Crow's Nest made The Veggielante's cut.  Which dishes were featured in the blog post? You'll have to head over to the Riverfront Times' website to find out.  What other restaurants offer tasty vegetarian-friendly dishes in Maplewood and…

Maplewood Praised for Downtown Shopping, Dining

ALIVE Magazine named Maplewood among its most livable neighborhoods. What makes it special to you?

What’s your favorite thing about Maplewood? ALIVE Magazine named Maplewood among the "most livable neighborhoods" in St. Louis--and are you surprised? "In recent years, Maplewood has become a bastion of fine food, with a number of award-winning restaurants opening up downtown. And as the home of Schlafly Bottleworks, it has also become one of the hubs of St. Louis' thriving microbrew scene," writes Matt Sorrell. The feature highlights trusted breakfast spots (Foundation Grounds and Stone Spiral), and its unique batch of shops: Vom Fass, St. Louis Cellars, Pie Oh My and Kakao Chocolate, to name a few. (Check out April's digital issue.) At Patch we're thrilled that the city received such an honor, but we want to know, what makes Maplewood …

Nearly every new business that I work with is in awe of the support and warm welcome they receive from our community. This is especially true from businesses who have operated in other municipalities. They are surprised to find fellow business owners, residents, and elected officials are genuinely rooting for their success. On a personal level, one of my favorite things about Maplewood (at least …   more ›

Jumpin' Jupiter is Gone: Now What for the Corner?

A sign from Red Brick, the company that owns the property at the corner of Manchester Road and Sutton Boulevard, now hangs in what was once Jumpin' Jupiter. What business should open here?

After a tumultuous year and a half, the Jumpin' Jupiter has exited the city of Maplewood.  The space at the corner of Manchester Road and Sutton Boulevard now sits vacant with a large sign from Red Brick, the company that owns the property.  It got us at Patch wondering about what's next for the downtown Maplewood business community.  What business would you like to see open in Maplewood? What does Maplewood need that might require a bar and a stage? Tell us in the comments! More on Jumpin' Jupiter in Maplewood, and other business articles:

Strange Donuts Held a Party at The Post in Maplewood

Curious to see just how strange the doughnuts really are?

Fans following the progress of Strange Donuts were treated to their first tasting on Thursday evening.  Patch introduced you to three men behind Strange Donuts in January. Since then, they have launched a Kickstarter campaign and developed a following on Twitter and Facebook.  On Thursday, they held a party at The Post Sports Bar and Grill to introduce the business to a wider community.  "It has been an absolute mad rush," shouted Billy Bommarito, better known as Sweet Will, over the loud hum of a crowd gathered in The Post's back room. At least 45 people were packed into the room at any one time during the first hour. Strange Donuts made about 600 doughnut holes for the event, and more than half were gone within the first 20 minutes, …

The maple bacon donut was amazing. What really excites me, though, is that it was not just the maple and bacon that made it great; the actual doughy part was easily the best I have had (and I have had my share of donuts). This is not going to be a shop that masks a so-so product with a gimmick; these are going to be top-rate donuts with creativity and care built-in.   more ›

Is Maplewood's Boom Slowing Down?

A line in St. Louis Magazine's November issue drew a response from Maplewood's community development director, who called the sentence a "pointless and off-putting message."

In a St. Louis Magazine article highlighting downtown Maplewood's retail options, one sentence didn't sit very well with Rachelle L'Ecuyer, the city's community development director.  The article, which ran in the magazine's November issue, included the line, "With Mezzanine and Monarch Restaurant closing in the past year, Maplewood’s boom seems to have slowed."  L'Ecuyer responded by submitting a letter for the magazine's February issue. In it, she wrote about the city's evolution into a "walkable historic downtown" over the past decade. She noted that the city contains only two vacant storefronts in downtown Maplewood, compared to more than 10 about seven years ago. She also wrote that Home Wine Kitchen was named "2012 Restaurant of the …

New Doughnut Shop Planning to Open in Maplewood

The shop is planning to move into the space recently vacated by Pixies Hair Design on Sutton Boulevard.

A shop serving traditional doughnuts, as well as more imaginative creations now found in shops on the coasts, is seeking a May opening in downtown Maplewood.  Corey Smale, one of the partners in a bakery planning to move into the space recently vacated by Pixies Hair Design on Sutton Boulevard, said he grew up going to shops like World’s Fair Doughnuts, John Donut and Donut Drive-In. The new Maplewood shop will be called Strange Donuts. “We love the classics, but also, what’s been done with cupcakes is being done with doughnuts in other cities,” Smale said. “Voodoo Doughnuts, in Portland, Oregon, has national recognition. They were the first to add bacon to a doughnut. In St. Louis we haven’t seen it done.” One of the partners in the …

Two Retailers Coming to Downtown Maplewood

Owner David Schlafly is rehabbing the space in the 7400 block of Manchester Road.

One of the larger unoccupied commercial spaces in downtown Maplewood will hopefully soon have tenants. David Schlafly, owner of the 10,000 square foot building at 7412 Manchester Road, won’t say yet who the tenants will be, only that there will be two of them and they will be retail. The building sits between Stricker Auto Service and Tiffany's Original Diner. (See related on Patch: QuikTrip Frustrations Underscore Maplewood Meeting) He’s doing a gut rehab that will expose the brick walls and maple floors. The false ceiling will be removed and a loft area will be built. New windows will go in the front and back of the building, and skylights will be added. The building will be named “Light Works.” He expects the work to be finished in time…
